Page 10- The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 22, 1991 Men's lacrosse thirsty for. another victory by Mitch Rubenstein Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's lacrosse team beat itself Wednesday night. For reasons not known to the cap- tain, many of the Michigan players suffered a mental breakdown for much of the contest as the team fell 15-10 at the hands of Oberlin Col- lege. The weary Wolverine seniors came off the field at the end of the game realizing the team had let a victory slip away. The leaders of the Michigan club (1-2) have managed to draw out some positive feelings from the neg- ative well into which the team has fallen. According to captain Dave Fitzpatrick, "The rest of the season should be very successful." The rest of the season for the Maize and Blue starts tomorrow in Kalamazoo where the squad travels to play Western Michigan. What the Wolverines have going for them is the opportunity to re- deem themselves on the field. The Michigan camp has had two full days to ponder its misfortunes. The Wolverines must now set their sights on a Bronco team they beat at home last fall by a close 12-7 score. According to Fitzpatrick, defeating the Broncos for a second time will not be that easy. "This will be a close game," the captain said. "Over the years they have become a very strong club." Looming large for the Wolver- ines is a game Sunday at home against Indiana. The Hoosiers have traditionally fielded a weak squad in Big Ten club play, but the Wolver- ines cannot afford to take them for granted. All conference matches are important, for the results of the reg- ular season games are used to deter- mine the seedings at the Big Ten tournament. "We are still the favorites to win the Big Ten," a confident Fitzpatrick said. Winning the year-end conference tournament remains the Wolverine captain's number one goal. "I want to go out on top," Fitzpatrick said. The team's quest for back-to-back titles begins tomorrow, but the team's road to the top will not be without its obstacles. "We need to work hard on our one-on-one defense in practice, as well as on offense - we need to work on our ball movement and exe- cuting our plays," Fitzpatrick said. It appears that the Michigan cap- tain has the team headed in the right direction. It is now up to the team to make good on the captain's promises.
