Has there ever been more stirring renditions of the Michigan fight song than those heard in Yost Ice Arena this weekend? Two seasons ago, Michigan coach Red Berenson talked about his goals. He said he wanted the hairs on the "back of your head to stand up" when Michigan players came out of the lockerroom and onto the ice. With capacity crowds on their feet, the band's sounds definitely had hairs standing on edge. It was a tremendous sight and feeling. Now, let's list the good and the bad about the hockey pep band. They are a pep band, and play material a pep band should. Take note basketball. They are at the top of their game in the first period. They die in the second period. Where are they? They sit and don't play. Did you forget you brought musical instruments? On Friday, after sitting quiet during numerous breaks, the guy with the cow bell started hacking out his little rhythm. Startled that anyone might tread on their sacred turf, the band begins to play, knocking out the cheer. Bad move, guys. They insist on having three or four saxophones play some little melody. I don't know what it is because only those within a six foot radius can hear. Get a clue. Can three saxophones be heard with 7,000 people in the building? I think not. The athletic department, since it saved money from the basketball team's no show in the NCAA, should plan on sending the band, or at least a portion of it, to Boston. Remember the flack Bo Schembechler caught when he wasn't smart enough to do the same when the basketball team went to Atlanta? Then again, they won a national championship that year. Coincidence? Anyhow, pay the bucks, send the band. And keep playing The Victors. - MIKE GILL Michigan Daily Athlete-of-the-Week WHO: Joey Gilbert TEAM: Wrestling HOMETOWN: Orland Park, IlIl. Ruddock looks to shave Tyson i Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) - Donovan "Razor" Ruddock recalls watching in dismay as James "Buster" Dou- glas beat Mike Tyson. He thought that should have been him in there winning the heavyweight championship. Douglas got the shot when Tyson pulled out of a scheduled Nov. 18, 1989, defense against Ruddock because of illness. "I can knock him out in three rounds," Ruddock thought as he watched Douglas' 10th-round knockout of Tyson on Feb. 11 at Tokyo. On Monday night, Ruddock gets a chance to translate his thoughts into action when he fights Tyson in a 12-round bout outdoors at The Mirage. Also appearing on the card are welterweight champions Simon Brown and Maurice Blocker, ju- nior welterweight champ Julio Ce- sar Chavez and Roberto Duran, who has held world titles in four weight classes. While no title is involved, the stakes are high for Tyson and Rud- dock. The winner will be in line for a mandatory title challenge against t " -r ' the winner of Evander Holyfield's title defense against George Fore- man on April 19 at Atlantic City, N.J. Holyfield knocked out Douglas in the third round last Oct. 25. Tyson is ranked the No. 1 con- tender and Ruddock No. 2 by the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association. The WBC wanted to withdraw championship recognition from Holyfield for signing to fight Foreman instead of Tyson, but was blocked by litigation from doing SO. "This is the fight for the legiti- mate heavyweight title," Ruddock said. "No one respects Evander Holy- field as the champ. There are only two of us - me and Mike Tyson - and one of us has to go." The wise guys say it will be Ruddock who goes. Tyson is the 5- 1 favorite., Asked why he would want to0 fight Tyson now instead of taking an easier path to a title bid, per- haps one against Tyson for a lot more money, Ruddock said: "I don't like the easy way. "I want to go against the grain. On March 18, I'm going against the grain." Most boxing people think the scheduled 12-rounder will not end in a decision.anda lot of the'm0 IN C" RESTAURANT -CHEF JAN 26 years of experience TOP GOLD MEDAL WINNER DF DETROIT COBO HALL NATIONAL CONTES Sponsored by Michigan Restaurant Association Michigan Chefs 0e Cuisine Association Lecture I Tuesday, March 19 Lecture II Wednesday, March 20 The Abstract Expressionist Coca Cola Bottle High, Low, and the Spirit of History i BLUE RIBBON BEST CHEF AWARD UN WASHINGTON .
