So don't fret; all your favorite Michigan sports coverage will be back next Monday. Cagers split two Big Te n contests by Rod Loewenthal Daily Sports Writer A recently slumbering Wolverine women's basketball team awakened Sunday and an unfortunate Wisconsin squad was the victim as Michigan drove the Badgers from Crisler, 90-69. For the second straight game Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege started center Michelle Hall in place of Nikki Beaudry. The switch paid dividends, as the first-year redshirt registered nine points and collected nine rebounds. The insertion of Hall also spread thin a Wisconsin defense intent on collapsing on streaking forward Trish Andrew, who was able to tally a team-high 16 points on eight-for- nine shooting. .°"Trish and Michelle in (the game) together was a real advantage for us," VanDeWege said. "Michelle takes the pressure off Trish." I Michigan (8-5 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) ran to an early 22-12 lead due in part to the spirited play of reserve point-guard Stacie McCall, who finished the game with 14 points. "I just went out there and used t+ y assets and had fun," McCall said. But Wisconsin (7-6, 2-2) clawed back with seven straight points and headed into halftime down, 33-32. Michigan inmediately took con- tiol early in the second period behind the shooting of Leah Wooldridge. The point-guard sank two three- pointers along with two other field goals as she amassed 10 points in a little over three minutes. I KENNE I H MULLEI/ Purdue guard Jimmy Oliver drives around Michigan's Kirk Taylor in the Boilermakers' 86-69 victory Saturday. by Jett Sheran Daily Basketball Writer WEST LAFAYETTE - Mackey Arena seemed like a coffee shop Saturday night during Michigan's 86-69 loss to Purdue. There was a whole lotta dunkin' going on, and the ranking cop was Jimmy Oliver. The Michigan defense was one big donut, allowing holes for Boilermaker baskets all night long. Oliver twisted Wolverine defenders and wrung them for 35 points, in- cluding three of Purdue's 12 dunks in the game. "It just happened to be one of those games where they weren't get- ting back, and we got some transi- tion dunks," Boilermaker coach Gene Keady said. "It's also a sign of a young team. Once they learn they've got to get back on defense, they'll be a lot better in this league." Michigan's offense suffered as well. The Wolverines (7-7 overall, 0-4 Big Ten) could not sink a basket with a torpedo, shooting 36.7 percent from the field. In fact, the team shot better from the three-point line (40 percent) than overall. Michigan guard Demetrius Calip provided the team's lone double- figure scoring performance, amass- ing a Big Ten career-high 26 points. "I think we played pretty good defense and just kept them on their heels all night," Oliver said. Purdue forward Chuckie White, who notched seven of Purdue's dunks and finished the game with 16 points, disagreed. "It just seemed like they were go- ing through the motions," he said. "I don't want to get down on them, but it didn't seem like they were playing that hard." Michigan coach Steve Fisher ac- knowledged his squad's lax play as well. "We were sluggish and we were everything you don't want to be when you come in and you play a team on their home court," he said. "We didn't have what we carried int d py ae arht " n ffnr score at 33-19. Purdue did not press for most of the, game, and implemented a zone defense. Fisher employed several deferrt; sive schemes, but none successfullye' thwarted Oliver & Co. He turned t99 junior walk-on Freddie Hunter just.i 4:08 into the first half, but Hunter could not stop Oliver, either. ; "Man-to-man there was a mid4 match, and he shot right over the zone," forward Sam Mitchell said of- Oliver. "I think we could have stog. ped him. It was just a lack of conre centration on the whole team's part~: Michigan hosts fellow Big Tel @0 basement-dweller Northwestern, next, but Fisher doesn't regard ther- less competitive Wildcats lightly. 7 "We're going to have to go back and say we're not playing North-# western to see who gets out of tenth" place, but for the national champ-, ionship - play with that type of" vigor and emotion," Fisher said' "We didn't have it tonight." 14J4 MICHIGAN (78) Player TFG FT R A PF TP:. As Purdue's Jimmy Oliver slammed one of his monster dunks, Mitchell could only walk back toward his own basket and get into offensive position. While beginning his trot, Mitchell lowered his head and mumbled something that rhymes with "bit," which is basically what the Wolverines did Saturday. Nobody expected Michigan to win the national championship or even the Big Ten this year. Nobody expected it to blow away opponents. Fans understand that talent-wise, Michigan is not a top-20 team. But fans do expect a team that utilizes all of its tal- ent. Saturday night, that was not true. The Wolverines played a brand of basketball that lacked effort. Purdue capitalized and blew away Michigan. Even the Boilermaker fans lost interest with the Wolverines, chanting "Beat IU" in honor of Purdue's Monday game with arch-rival Indiana. But hey, Michigan lost interest. It's only natural the Purdue faithful should follow suit. "Tonight we didn't have what we carried into every game and that was effort," Michigan coach Steve Fisher said. "We got a whipping from beginning to end." The Wolverine defense employed two styles: the matador and the maitre d'. The former features a Flat ''plays efense (no Michigan player standing firm, then moving out of the way and watching the Purdue player go by (Shouting "Ol!" is not necessary, although that much effort by a Wolverine may have caused a coronary). The latter de- fensive style occurs as a Wolverine defender ushers a penetrating player to the basket, always with arms out- stretched but a step behind. And those occurred only when Michigan players were in position to make defensive plays. As often as not, Wolverines were out of place. "It was not only lack of defense down low, but lack of defense all over. I could have scored on some of (Purdue's) open shots," said Fisher, who scored 56 points during his entire career at Illinois State. "It's one thing to be 6-0 and win the national cham- pionship," Fisher said. "It's another to be 0-4 and star- ing down the muzzle of the Big Ten." Fortunately for the Wolverines, they play Northwestern next. That's a break which should enable Michigan to avoid matching its 0-6 start in 1981-82. "If we go in Thursday, pull off a win against Northwestern, maybe that'll inspire us some," Michigan guard Kirk Taylor said.
