RECORDS
Continued from page 5
into oblivion.
The Soul Cages is an album that
warrants excessive listening and
scrutiny, as Sting, being an ex-
deity and all, deserves careful
consideration. The video for "All
This Time" had to be watched
time and time again to make
absolutely certain that it wasn't re-
ally Paul Simon behind that boring
but infectious chorus. And the al-
bum does improve as time and the
number of listenings progress and
the shock of hearing an ex-post
punker turn cheesy wears off.
Sting's use of World Beat
rhythms and instruments can even
be catchy at times. Basically,
however, nothing stands out on this
album except "All This Time,"
and that's only because it's always
on the radio. Yes, my friends,
Sting is a pop musician. And he
likes it.
Perhaps Gordon's acting career
will burgeon as he "matures."
Then maybe he'd spare us all that-
"save the world" crap. Someone
remarked that the lyrics on Soul
Cages read like a novel. Sting is
famous for turning his causes into
mini-stories and putting them to
music. This technique has worked
in the past. As far as Soul Cages
goes, though, Sting should have
left .the storytelling to the authors,
the boyish songwriting and video-
izing to Simon, and the boring
melodies for the birds. .
Yawn.

Adamski
Dr. Adamski's Musical
Pharmacy
MCA
You know, it's a little-known
fact that much of the type of house
music done by people like
Adamski is written for the express
purpose of amusing small rodents,
such as hamsters and gerbils.
Having written that ludicrous
sentence, I am now freed from the

daunting task of writing a lead
sentence for this review - a task
that until now I had been unable to
do, It's not that I don't have
anything to say about this record,
but I just couldn't crack the ice. Sa
that first sentence came to me as I
was waking up one morning and I
thought, what the hell? Who
knows? Maybe there's a grain ot
truth to it. Adamski's face does sort
of look like a gerbil.
Whatever the amount of small
rodent amusement is, Adamski has
made some pretty good stuff for
human enjoyment. Although he-
will never go down in anyone's
book as a great singer, he knows a
good groove when he hears it. And
Musical Pharmacy is replete with
examples of this.
For those of you who don't
know (and that must be a vast
majority, considering his relative
U.S. obscurity), Adamski is
Britain's latest techno export, fresh
from cutting his teeth on the
"rave" circuit in the U.K., which
yielded his first effort, the live.
Liveandirect. Like his con-
temporaries, the Happy Mondays
et al., Adamski's music is upbeat,
presumably fueled in large part by
happy drug Ecstasy (hence the
"pharmacy" in the title) and has a,
sort of cartoonish quality that can'
help but liven up one's mood, soar
of like an illegitimate heir to the
throne of Vince Clarke of Erasure.
Howard Jones on acid, maybe?
Anyway, Adamski tops off the
combination by having some cot-s.
siderable musical chops. Over ex
pertly-programmed grooves, h:
layers some great jazz-influence4
piano playing. As mentioned, he.'s
no great singer, but he makes up
for this often by either doing in-
strumentals, having a guest singer,-
or, when he sings, augmenting the
song with plenty of back-up
singers. On his cover of the Doors.
"Soul Kitchen," however, he dogs
manage a credible imitation of Jim
Morrison.
By far the best song is "Space
Jungle," which borrows the words
from' Elvis' "All Shook Up" and
twists them perfectly into a soliil
house beat. Other notable track
include the U.K. top ten single
"Killer" and the nine-minuty
"N.R.G. Symphony in F Minor.";
There are a few crappy a songs;
however, such as the lame "I
Want You Back," which features a
predictable romantic rap from
Kurtis Blow. But the disc is over
70 minutes long; so filler is not ot:
of the question.
