Kent State next up for men's gymnasts by Robert Siegel Daily Sports Writer For all the Big Ten power- houses it has faced recently, the Michigan men's gymnastics team may face its stiffest competition this Monday against unheralded Kent State. "This is definitely a sleeper team," first-year gymnast Royce Toni said. "They've got everything to play for." Indeed Kent State does. As a possible NCAA qualifier, the team is on the bubble. And with so few meets remaining before selection time, the chance to play at home against a top team like Michigan is a golden opportunity. This is not to say that the Wol- verines don't have incentives of their own. "I'm not content," Michigan coach Bob Darden said. "We still want to get our scores up before NCAA selection time." Having Jim Round competing again in the all-around should improve team scores. But the Wolverines will have to overcome the loss of standout Glen Hill to a wrist injury. Mike Mott is slated to compete in his place on the 1 . Round pommel horse. "Glen usually has the highest scores," Mott said. "But I won't let the pressure get to me. I'm looking forward to Kent State, as is the rest of the team." Lacrosse to open season by Mitch Rubenstein Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's lacrosse club begins their season against arch-rival Michigan State Saturday at 1 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. The Wolverines, the defending Big Ten champions, are hoping to improve on last year's 15-3 record. This year's team is led by senior captains Marc Silbergeld and midfielders Adam Bovone and Rich Belanger. This group has ye to beat the MSU varsity team. "An intense rivalry has de- veloped between us and State since I began playing at Mich- igan," said Silbergeld. "This year we will have our best chance." In past meetings between the teams, the Spartans' superior cond- itioning and depth have enabled them to dominate the second half, of play. The team travels to East Lansing without Belanger, who is out for a month with a thigh injury suffered during spring break. Bo- vone and Silbergeld both have proven capable of leading the team in Belanger's absence. If the Wolverines can come away with an upset this weekend, it is likely this year's team will go undefeated and repeat it's Big Ten club championship. Women gymnasts vault into Iowa Friday 4:30 7:10 Saturday and Sunday 11:30 2:00 4:30 7:10 9:45 Friday and Saturday Midnight Shows by Jeff Williams After last weekends meet with Louisiana State University, the Michigan women's gymnastics team is one tenth of a point behind Big Ten leader Wisconsin in the regional standings. That tenth of a point also separates the Wol- FOX VILLAGE 375 N. Maple 769-1300 verines from a birth in the Region- al Championships held April 6-7. The Wolverines will travel to Iowa this weekend to try and -close that gap. Their last meeting was the second meet of the season, in which, Michigan won 184.75- 184.35. "We beat them in the beginning of the season, but they have an improving team," Wolver- ine coach Bev Fry said. "They'll be at home though, so that will make a big difference." Throughout the season the Wolverines have also improved steadily. In the last four weeks they have broken the school record three different times. The team has three more meets before the regionals, including the Big Ten Championships, March 22-23. Allison Winsky and Wendy Wilkinson have been the Wolver- ines best performers in the all- around this year, and both are ranked in the top ten in the region. Debbie Geiger and Kim Crocker have also done well this season. mmmmol I r ._ . _ x =_ _: ?_ }.i _- -_ _ ._ _ _ ..._ _.e III- -Modea J L Get Your 91/92 Aplication Materials in to the RGOOD BOOK THIS SUMMER.
