RECORDS Continued from page 5 any particular cut on the Sex Pack- ets album, grooves the Digital Un- derground's malevolent, ominous image well into the detritus of their predecessors and inspirations, George Clinton, Georgio Moroder, Bernie Worrell, and Bootsy Collins with- standing. Exchanging the 808 kick for the sound of brushes on snare and utilizing Fuze's scratching the sound of Miles Davis' trumpet, "Nuttin' Nis Funky" deserves the extensive length that Shock G/the Piano Man (the same person?) gives it to groove on. This jam is not about the ur- gency of funk as much as a "Funkentelechy" or "Psychodiscoal- phabetabioaquadoloop"-type, slanten- dicular excursion into escapism. "Same Song" narrowly evades the superfluity of a hip-hop reworking of the wedding song, "Tie the Knot," largely due to the Piano Man groov- ing a tough solo on a Hammond- type organ, closer to the efforts of McCoy Tyner than Prince Paul or Hank Shocklee. A disco-fied remix of "Packet Man" retells a story about nonexistent synthetic drugs, sex packets, referred to by Shock G as "biochemically compacted sexual af- fection." The "Worth a Packet- Remix" exploits Love Orches- tra/Barry White-type strings along with piano lines obviously from the Chic Organization school of ro- mance. Will the DU never tire of,. tugging at our heartstrings or just plainly fucking our minds? -Forrest Green III The Original Sins Self-Destruct Psonik/Sky-Clad I've had this record since Decem- ber and really should have raved about it already, but I had my doubts that any of you would actually heed my suggestion to buy it. But now that Rolling Stone has given it three and a half out of five stars, perhaps some of you will believe that this obscure group plays some jammin' rock 'n' roll well worth an investment. The Original Sins hail from~ Pennsylvania and Self-Destruct was released on a label distributed from' New Jersey, so it's not too surpris- ing they aren't well-known in the Sub-Pop/ Amphetamine Reptile- dominated undie scene here. But what is Self-Destruct like? Titles such as "Do It," "Nowhere to Go (From Here But Down)," "Higher," and especially "Alice D." should prepare you for lyrics exhort- ing release of the mind and the ass. Some of the best records I own proudly state "there are no keyboards on this record," but this is one band with an appropriately-psychotic- enough cheesy organ sound to stay in my collection. Keyboardist Dan (just Dan) plays the most exciting ancient-tech electricified piano I've heard since playing some ? & the Mysterians and Lyres wax. The rest of the band is similarly wigged; Self-Destruct is "dedicated to: V.U., Stooges, Seeds, Ramones, Bo Did- dley and everyone else who knows anger can be fun." Fortunately though, it has none of the pop ele- ments of P.I.L., just pure feedback, distortion, grunge, all that other See RECORDS, Page 8 LSTANLY H.
