BOOKS
Continued from page 5
and irrationality are not just the ab-
sence of wisdom, any more than
black in Goya's paintings is merely
the absence of color." And regarding
20th-century American painter Ed-
ward Hopper, Hughes states, "The
word great is debased today, crippled
by contemporary hype, and perhaps
it only clouds what it seeks to
praise."
What is best about Hughes,
though, is the fearless confidence
(and at times arrogance) of his com-
mentary. Unlike critical wimps like
Gene Shalit, Hughes is merciless
with his barbs. When dealing with
connoisseurs who "love" abstract-
expressionist Mark Rothko but don't

know what he's trying to communi-
cate, Hughes characterizes their be-
havior as "sublime, sublime, sub-
lime, sublime: the reflexes go click-
ety-clack, all the way down the
Guggenheim ramp." Or there are
those who miss the point of video
and see it as "a grainy close-up of
some UCLA graduate rubbing a
cockroach to pulp on his left nipple
while the soundtrack plays amplified
tape-hiss, backward."
His most ruthless criticism,
though, is reserved for other critics.
In his review for the New York
Times of French post-modern critic
Jean Baudrillard's America, Hughes
writes: "It's hard to say which is
worse: Baudrillard's absolutism, his
sophomoric nihilism or his disdain
for empirical sense ...the star of his

own road movie, Baudrillard spendsa
great deal of time driving... [but he]
appears to meet nobody and hear
nothing; the only voice in America
is his own, a heated and self
mythologizing flow of apostrophes'
and aphorisms." As Hughes himself
would say, ouch.
Fortunately, though, this anger
and belligerence is not hollow.
Hughes' encyclopedic knowledge of
both history and art history and his
ability to relate those facts to the art
in question yields insights and con-
clusions which are right on the
mark. In the end, his essays are not
about what art is but about what it
means. And that's what criticism is
all about.
