Page 12-The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 11, 1991 Fencers hope to foil foes at Ohio State by Ryan Herrington Daily Sports Writer As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. So it is with the Michigan fencing club's three week hiatus from.competition. The Wolverines look to shake the cobwebs off their weapons before their schedule resumes this Saturday at Ohio State. While the team is not looking at this weekend's meet in Columbus as a burden, it does head into the competition with the disadvantage of not having had a formal practice in more than a month. And whatever momentum the fencers might have gained from their strong showing at the Michigan Invitational 26 days ago has been all but forgotten. "It's going to be a rough tournament," said senior fencer Philip Issa. "We should do okay but there is no way to tell how the team will perform (due to the lack of practice this week)." Questions also surround how good the team's opponents will be in Columbus. The fencers will face teams from Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue, as well as host Ohio State. While the Fighting Illini and the Buckeyes have been perennial quality opponents, there is no consensus as to who is the real favorite going into the tournament. "We don't really know who are the stronger teams," said Issa. "MSU should do well and Illinois has al- ways been tough. We'll have to wait and see." Saturday's duels mark the first meet of the collegiate team season for the Wolverines. Each school in Columbus can have three fencers, male or female, in the sabre and epee classes. In addition, men's and women's foil allow for three and four fencers, respectively, to round out their teams. The meet is solely a team competition, with no rewards for any individual performances. Michigan will have Issa, Tom Constantino and Jeff White in the men's foil with team president Sarah Hipp, Laura Eilers, Bonny Chen and Leah Beecher in the women's. Russ Turner, Nik Weber and John Tintinaoli will duel in the sabre class while Ted Morrison and Eric McAlpine will compete in the epee. Following this weekend's festiv- ities, the Wolverines will resume their normal training schedule of practices Monday through Thursday nights at the Sports Coliseum. The fencers look forward to resuming practices in their attempt to continue their winning trend that began at the close of 1990. The team is hoping that the trend is one good thing that won't come to an end. Write with Us Call 764-05521 Welcome Back Students, Faculty & Staff! Michigan (4-0) will face its toughest test of the young season when it takes on a mat full of top- ranked teams this weekend at the National Team Duals in Hampton, Va. The Wolverines, seeded eighth out of sixteen teams in the tourney will face the young, unseeded Okla-& homa Sooners in the first round Af the double elimination tournament. Michigan should have the edge in this youth vs. youth matchup with four Wolverines - Joey Gilbert (134 pounds), Sean Bormet (158), Lanny Green (177) and Phil Tomek (Heavyweight.) - ranked in the top 12 nationally of their respective weight classes. Coach Dale Bahr will also insert a new wrestler in the lineup this weekend as transfer student Bill Mercer (167), from the University of New Mexico, becomes eligible this weekend. Mercer, a sophomore, will replace first-year wrestler Kevin Williams, who has struggled so far this season with a 4-7-1 record. "Kevin is going through the typical freshman syndrome," Bahr. said. "He lost a few early matches and now has lost confidence in himself." Bahr is looking for his veterans to provide leadership in the team's first-round matchup. "Our stars and leaders really need to come through for us," Bahr said. "If we can win those matches, our other guys should score enough points for us to win." However Bahr is less optimistic about the Wolverines' probable second-round matchup against two time defending national champion Oklahoma State. "They are ranked first nationally, and are an experienced team," he said. "We don't have much of a chance against them." Bahr has not looked ahead at the Wolverines' chances after the secondO round. "After OSU, I don't even know who we could be wrestling against. We'll just take it one match at a time," he said. The coach looks forward to the learning experience his team will gain by participating in Virginia. "It's a great opportunity to wrestle against a team of Oklahoma State's caliber," Bahr said. "Our guys should learn a lot by wrestling against a top team, and hopefully it will pay dividends as the season progresses. "It will be really exciting to see OSU and Iowa (ranked second) wrestle. They should meet in the finals and that will probably be a preview of the national champion- ship," Bahr said. SAVE 61% Dennison National Ring Binder $ 1" ring capacity. Available in 7 colors.
