RECORDS Continued from page 5 song jumps off the record as the least mediocre and most loud, and therefore the most interesting. The song is ruined by a stupid, out-of-place sax solo in the mid- dle, but it nods to Metallica, prov- ing at least that the band might like decent music even if they can't make it. There is also a clas- sical music instrumental break, "Concerto in D Minor," apparently written by Steve Napoleon. Why the song is here is not made clear, but it does show that Steve has had some musical education and that he knows how to kill a lull in an album after it has already died. The best song remains "I am the Idiot," which has Steve singing "I am the idiot, I am Napoleon." He said it, I didn't. -Annette Petrusso . And any local free-form blues bands should most certainly be able to re- late to "Rude," with its street-funk- metal set-up. Street? Funk? Metal? Yeah, but Helmet isn't a bunch of dilettantes. They know and live the genres that they shred into oblivion. Mengede was a member of the New Christs, from that great nation of Stooge-ap- propriating bands, Australia. Bogdan committed some post-hardcore atroc- ities with Poison Idea, while Stanier fine-tuned his precision drumming in various Floridan hardcore bands. And as mentioned before, Hamilton grad- uated from the Band of Susans with a degree in post-Sonic Youth theory and execution. What a pedigree! What a metallic onslaught! What penetrating analysis of the lives of amphetamine reptiles in Lower Manhattan! Helmet's tight rock satisfies like two hours of Headbangers' Ball co-hosted by Steve Albini, with Albini challeng- ing all of the bands that he plays to a fight. And they all accept. Add a fiery restau- rant manager, a diabolical direc- tor, his dweeb assistant, an aspir- ing bimbo, and a shadowed stage manager. What you come out with, stereotypes and all, is Andy New- berg's Kitchen Help. While the play chronicled a day in the life of Charles Fathoms (Steve Memran), unemployed actor, it also at- tempted to pull off a murder at the restaurant in which the first five characters, who were just men- tioned, work. The play was neatly divisible, representing the two worlds of Charles. In the theater, the audi- ence was introduced to Fentforth (Todd McMullen), the director, and Bixby (David Levine), the as- sistant, holding auditions. Levine played the nerdy right-hand man with good comedic timing, but one of the problems encountered was that McMullen was not nasty enough to warrant his eventual death; his exaggerated character was humorous, but lacked the ugly dimension needed to push Charles over the edge. The great cameo by the audi- tioning Marsha Martia (Liz Rich- mond) was the bright spot in the first half of the play, using both vi- sual and theatrical cues to play up her Brady Bunch monologue into searing drama. Erich Junworth as Ted, the stage manager, did a good job of pushing the broom but, like his character, was never really allowed in the spotlight. The second scene in the kitchen centered around Charles and his firing by Mrs. D (Nanette Muntin), the restauranteur. Obvi- ous devices were employed, such as Charles' monologue to the Spanish-speaking Salsa (Carrie Barnhardt). Barnhardt's Salsa did not live up to her character's name, nor to her spicy character description on the "menu" pro- gram. Her only line was a Que ? and the number 42, not leaving her much to work with; I kept waiting for her to curse in Spanish at her co-workers. Her character seemed straight out of a sitcom, and some of the lines exchanged with her would have been better suited for television. Memran as Chuck fell prey to the malady of over-exaggeration and barely managed to pull it off as his character's overacting. All of the characters in Kitchen Help were stereotypes, making it easy for the audience to quickly identify with them. Sometimes the two di- mensions were enough to carry the performance; Erin Dilly was great as Rodes, the hyper student in charge who was left with a murder on her shift. She used wild body movements to gesticulate, as did the teenage Zingo (Pete Ross), whose raw gestures and one-liners zinged off of the rest of the help. The ending of Kitchen Help did not match the rest of pace it was keeping. It dissolved into some- thing representative of Saturday Night Live's Jon Lovitz as Master- Thespian, calling out, "Acting!" In comparison to other serious Base- ment shows this season, Kitchen Help was a cute show serving up light fare, with a heavy dollop of drama on the side. -Diane Frieden Forest-Hill $230/mo to Aug.
