It's hard to believe that Book of Love's Lauren Roselli, Jade Lee, and Ted and Susan Ottaviano (left to right) are too happy on on their latest release, Candy Carol, but it's true. If we all suddenly reverted to second-grade mental levels and took a few bits of ecstasy, Candy Carol would be a pretty enjoyable record. Of course, anything would, and since this scenario is unlikely to happen - ecstasy is impossible to find - Candy Carol must be described by adult standards as incredibly sappy. If one were to ingest all of the sugar that coats this record, one would be bouncing off the walls for weeks on a major-sucrose buzz. Forget the PMRC - the American Dental Association should have put a warning label on this record. Sure, the first two Book of Love records were as sweet and innocent as anyone (could pretend to?) be. But Candy Carol goes completely overboard. Sample these lyrics from "Turn the World": "Love is all around and it's something you can see/ sing a simple song in four-part harmony." Butterflies, flowers, bowls of blueberries, and other such things are the main topics of many songs. (It was hard to decide which lyrics to print, as they're all equally corny.) Add an undercurrent of Catholic imagery, as on "Counting the Rosaries," and the effect is even more sweet. The music tends to be equally corny; it's nearly always major-key, two-chord, synth-pop without any bite. The songwriting has also taken a down turn. While the first two records were pretty good, especially the debut, most of Candy Carol is forgettable. In addition, the dance value that propelled earlier songs like "Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls" is conspicuously absent. While a good house beat would forgive much of the lovey-dovey-ness here, the band stops short of the dance floor. The only possible exception to this is "Alice Everyday," which has a moderately good beat. You can tap your foot to it, so I'd give it a seven. The rest of the record would not score nearly as high. While it's all well and good to be optimistic and cheerful, Book of Love's abnormally high level of good spirits can getG downright annoying. If you think that music should have a least a little edge, then Candy Carol is not a good choice. -Mike Molitor . te. rV Best Parles/ Best rces South Padre Parpre from:$ . person Cancun I from: person Space limited, Call NOW: 995-...2 RECORDS Continued from page 5 been the ultimate bad-ass cowboy. Then, just to bury any possible confusion, Welch jumps into "The Mother Road" and starts singin' 'bout "that good ol' road" that "would take you all the way/ From Clark and Ogden Street up in Chicago/ To Lincoln and Olympic in L.A." "The Mother Road" mourns the loss of the "old way of life." Perhaps the most poignant song on the LP is the final one, "A Letter To Dustin," which considers the problem of being away from your children. The -lyrics speak for themselves: "Well I've seen that ocean now/ And it ain't deep enough/ To hold how much you mean to me." Kevin Welch is definitely coun- try, but it's a different kind of country - hillbilly, hectic, and hickish at times, but not always; instead, for the most part, rather refreshing. -Kim Yaged In The Nursery L'esprit Wax Trax! Out of the of the dark and stormy halls of Wax Trax! comes a release unlike any of their others. Gone are the screaming vocals and distorted guitars from groups like Ministry and the Revolting Cocks. Gone are. the deafening beats and overpowering synths of the Thrill Kill Kult and KMFDM. Gone are all of the typical elements that make a Wax Trax! band a Wax Trax! band. Instead, with In The Nursery the listener finds subtlety, romance, and passion. L'esprit is a classically-inspired release from the English band. The brilliant songs on the album have all the elements of traditional classical music, along with a few studio effects that enhance the fullness of the instruments. Layers of lush strings sing in rich harmonies. Bells and pianos play the mostly happy, occasionally sad melodies. And the rare percussion used on the album serves to dramatize and intensify key moments of particularly emotional songs. In addition to the instrumentals on the album, In The Nursery also created a few songs which feature the vocal talents of Dolores Marguerite C. Her soft and airy voice works well with the flowing pieces and succeeds in giving added emotion to the songs. Unfortunately, I didn't know what the heck she was saying because the lyrics are in French. But that doesn't matter, because this is mood music to the greatest extreme. Just as artists like the Cocteau Twins take the listener on an emo- tional journey, In The Nursery has learned the art of creating songs with real feeling. And the listener can't help being taken along with the band through the highs and lows that their songs evoke. Titles like "Azure Wings," "Scenes Of Childhood," "The Pearl," and "At First Sight" go a long way in describing the dreamlike feelings evoked by L' esprit. Reading the back cover offers this insight to what In The Nursery. succeeded in doing: "L'esprit - Like The Breathless Beat Of Angels' Wings." Richard S.
