MORE! the Reduced Shakespeare Com- pany accomplished all this and more, verifying the statement that brevity is the soul of wit. The "high-speed, roller-coaster type condensation of all of Shake- speare's plays," as the program de- scribed the performance, provided hilarious, slapstick versions of his works which appealed to everyone, familiar with his plays or not. The quick witticisms of every line proved the eloquence of the three members of the RSC, Adam Long, Jess Borgeson, and Reed Martin. With a natural stage pres- ence, the hilarious trio proved their alacrity and sharpness in wit through ad lib situations, such as expounding on audience com- ments. Energetic and enticing, the Company captivated the audience with their modern anachronisms of Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet were victims of petty fighting and spleen losses. Troilus and Cressida include the addition of Godzilla, and Shakespeare's historical plays were performed as the all-Ameri- can pastime of football, with a penalty called for the fictional character on the field. All in all, the RSC's perfor- mance was a wonderfully unique presentation of one of the greatest literary masters of all time. Wiping away the stigma and intimidation of Shakespeare, it brought the au- dience together with the perform- ers and produced a boisterous evening of entertainment and fun. -Sue Uselman RECORDS Continued from page 5 the late '70s, Tackhead has gone through a few different stages. Gui- tarist Skip McDonald, drummer Keith LeBlanc, and bassist Doug Wimbush, who have worked with the likes of Mick Jagger and R.E.M., started off as Tackhead Sound System and built up a reputa- tion as a frenetic live band. They re- leased several singles in the early '80s, relying mainly on their musi- cal prowess and samples of, among others, Margaret Thatcher. Since about 1987, the group has featured vocalist Bernard Fowler and a key- boardist. Strange Things hopefully finds them settled on their current high-tech funk sound. Tackhead sounds at once dated and ultra-modern. Over grooves that recall George Clinton's work with Parliament-Funkadelic (which seems to be a popular influence these days), the band layers a few dialogue samples and the latest in guitar and keyboard effects. Wimbush and LeBlanc form an excellent rhythm section, and the entire band sounds extremely well-rehearsed. Of course, it helps that they're all great musicians. From the bluesy "Take a Stroll" (which features Mick Jagger on harmonica) to the hip-hop "See the Fire Burning" (which features rapper Melle Mel), the band proves itself adept at different styles. They pay tribute to Clinton with a cover of his "Super Stupid" that blows Big Chief's local boys version out of the water, especially in terms of vocal delivery. (Henssler et al did come out with their version first, however.) Vocalist Fowler completes the combination. Although he often sounds as if every syllable that comes out of his mouth carries a bit too much emotional weight, Fowler has some interesting things to say. Written before our current Persian Gulf mess, "For This I Sing" seems eerily prophetic: "Called away in the prime of life... I've got to make a decision/ Am I gonna give my life for this country/ when so many peo- ple have nothing?" -Mike Molitor Italian - Restaurant o Xt 4$ o~ with our finest homemade Pastas and Pizza.
