Detroit tourney to
test Blue fencers

It has been thought that it's
tougher to repeat a good perform-
ance than it is to perform well the
first time. The Michigan fencing
club will test this hypothesis Satur-
day at the University of Detroit.
The Wolverines are coming off
one oftheir more impressive meets
of the season. While only the
women's foil team could compete
last weekend at Wayne State, it was
able to defeat two varsity teams,
Case Western and Detroit. It also
looked impressive in losses to Ohio
State and host Wayne State, both
highly-ranked varsity teams.
The fencers are also coming off
one of the more unusual weeks of
the season. This year's schedule
included a collegiate meet every
weekend during the first two months
of the year. Three classes: men's
foil, mixed sabre and epee, had to
take a' week off from actual
competition last week, thus altering
the schedule. This affected the level
of play at last week's practices, as
the majority of the team knew it
essentially had a week off.
Saturday, the entire team hopes
to recapture the success the women
recorded last weekend. The Wol-
verines will compete in a nine-team
field which includes Eastern Mich-

igan, Michigan State, St. Mary's,
Wayne State, Notre Dame, Ohio
State, Chicago and Detroit. Mich-
igan team president Sarah Hipp feels
that Notre Dame, Wayne State and
Ohio State are the class of the meet.
Yet, the fencers believe that they
can surprise one of the big three this
weekend. Team practices have been
very good the last few days and the
morale of the team is very high.
"I think we have a good idea of
how Ohio State has performed in the
past," men's foil competitor Philip
Issa said. "I think that if we are
fencing well on a particular day, we
could really give them a scare."
However, success this weekend
won't be measured by how well
Michigan performs against these
three schools, but by how well it
does against the other competitors in
the meet. The Wolverines have faced
most of these schools in previous
meets and. feel that if they are
fencing well, they can defeat each
one of them.
The fencing club is at a very
crucial juncture in its season. No
tournament should ever be labeled as
a "must win" event, but for the
Wolverines, Saturday's meet will go
a long way in describing the 1991
season - one of steady
improvement or one of unfortunate
inconsistency.

leadership to help his team com-
pile a 37-1 record. Reggans, who
signed rather recently, was
considered by SuperPrep to be the
No. 1 defensive player in the
Midland states.
Moeller considered last year's
linebacking prospects to be ex-
cellent, thus he decided to pursue
only the best this year. With All-
American Jamie Mignon, Moeller
has accomplished his goal.
Mignon,cWisconsin's Player-of-
the-Year, was the outstanding line-
backing prospect in the Midwest.
If there is a weak link in this
year's class, Moeller suggests that
Michigan could have used another
wide receiver or defensive back.
However, Deollo Anderson and
Felman Malveaux both might help
if they can pass the Prop. 48
requirements. Anderson, an All-
American, is one of the top three
rated defensive backs in the _
nation. His combination of speed
and strength will allow him to play
either cornerback or safety. From
Beaumont, Tx., Malveaux rep-
resents one of the southwest's top
receivers, containing the best
receiver package by combining
speed, toughness and soft-hands.
With rookie star Ricky Powers
returning to claim the starting
tailback position,bmost thought
that it would be tough for
Michigan to add excellent running

back prospects. Instead, Michigan
went out and landed two All-
Americans, Tyrone Wheatley and
Che Foster.
Wheatley did it all in high
school, dominating Michigan ath-
letics in football and track. With
his tremendous talent, it should be
hard to keep him off the field.
Foster, one of the last to
commit, should make an impact at
fullback, especially with the
departure of Jarrod Bunch. Moeller
compared him to ex-Wolverine
Leroy Hoard.
Moeller frequently pointed to
third-year recruiting coordinator,
Bob Chmiel, for Michigan's
continuing success in recruiting.
Chmiel is particularly personable,
which is one reason that most
recruits become so fond of the
persistent salesman. After many
years in the field, Chmiel is finally
receiving the recognition he
undoubtedly deserves.
