The SlkCl VW Program Informational Meeting: Feb 5 7:30pm Alumni Center RECORDS Continued from page 5 The tunes that have been chosen are an interesting mix as well - from jazz standards ("On Green Dol- phin Street," "Skylark,") to a funky Jackie Wilson composition ("Baby Workout") that has closer thematic ties with Benson's mid-'70s work than with straight-ahead jazz. Those familiar with Benson's vo- cal work may find it a surprise to hear him sing jazz. His phrasing and intonation are excellent, and his tone is strong and clear. MORE! this clarity of tone works to his dis- advantage; at times, his voice sounds almost too good. Jazz singers such as Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme have a certain degree of breathiness in their tone that gives their singing a degree of charm and individualism. Benson, by comparison, sounds anonymous and dated, most notably when he sings Sinatra-esque popular songs such as "I Only Have Eyes For You." This complaint, however, is a tri- fling one; for the most part, Ben- son's vocals are excellent. On "Portrait of Jennie," Benson croons seductively over the backdrop of Robert Fahrnon's string arrange- ment, and on "Ready Now That You As for the guitar playing, Benson has subdued himself a bit. The al; bum is more of a showcase for hid vocals and the Basie Orchestra, and he does not give himself a chance to r stretch out with much solo work. The few glimpses we get of his playing are well-crafted, bebop-ori- ented improvisations, and it would have been nice to hear more of this. One gets the feeling throughout that Benson may be holding back just a bit, but it gives the album a smooth, relaxed feel. Above all, the B album swings, and as far as Count e n S o nBasie was concerned, that was al- ways the most important thing any- Are," he shows that he is a first-rate way. scat singer. -Ben Aquino CLASSIFIEDS Get Results! . .. - """"" - """ "" 76GIEIS HIRING!
