EAST LANSING (AP) -
George Perles likely won't continue
as both football coach and athletic
director at Michigan State when his
one-year trial in the dual roles
expires June 30.
Five of eight members of the
university's governing board told
The Associated Press they are
opposed to having Perles hold both
jobs. Two said they support Perles
and one said she is undecided.
Perles lost three supporters when
one was defeated in the November
election, one declined to seek re-
election, and another gave up her
position in January to take a job with

the state. He also lost the backing of
the governor's office when Demo-
crat James Blanchard was defeated.
The controversial 5-3 vote a year
ago gave Perles a one-year trial run
with no extra pay. The decision to
honor Perles' request was made
hastily after Perles, who revived an
ailing Spartan football program and
has a 54-36-4 record over eight
years, negotiated with the New York
Jets for the vacant head coach job.
Perles came to Michigan State in
1983 from the Pittsburgh Steelers,
where he was defensive coordinator
for the four-time Super Bowl
champions.

Fencers display promise in weekend meet

Saturday was a day of dis-
coveries. Not only did the ground-
hog find its shadow, but the
Michigan fencing club found that
it could play in the big time.
In a collegiate meet hosted by
Wayne State University, Mich-
igan's women's foil squad was the
lone club team in a tournament
full of varsity opponents. Despite
this fact, the Wolverines convin-
cingly defeated Case Western
Reserve and the University of
Detroit while falling to national
powers Ohio State and Wayne
S tate.
"Many varsity teams don't take
a club (team) that seriously,"
Wolverine team president Sarah
Hipp said. "I think we showed that
we are at the same level as a lot
of varsity teams.
"There were no big surprises.
We knew that OSU and Wayne
State were better then us. But we
also knew we could compete
against the others. It was just a
matter of doing it."
Wayne State had difficulties in
scheduling this weekend's event.
The coaches were unable to
reserve the entire sports building
for Saturday. Due to the lack of
space, only the women's foil
teams from each school were
allowed to participate.
Hipp, along with Bonnie Chen,
Laura Eilers, Leah Beecher and
newcomer Jennifer Ortiz competed

for the Wolverines. Ortiz, a first-
year student, fenced in her first
collegiate meet. She performed as
the fifth fencer, giving the regulars
a breather, as well as gaining
some valuable playing experience
of her own. Her presence was
important, as Hipp not only went
against other fencers, but she also
battled the flu.
"I didn't have that great a day,"
Hipp said. "I beat the people I
should have, but didn't do well
against Ohio State or Wayne
State."

With the rest of the squad
getting the weekend off, men's foil
captain Philip Issa aided coach Ivo
Wenzler by giving support to the
women.
As for the rest of the fencers,
their week long hiatus has ended.
It will be back to normal this
week, as they prepare for next
Saturday's collegiate meet at the
University of Detroit.
"Last week, the men took it
easy in practice," Hipp said. "This
week they will have to work just
as hard as the women."

As if next Saturday's comp-
etition was not enough, many of
the Wolverines will also be
competing individually in a United
States Fencing Association meet
at Oakland University Sunday.
As for now, the Wolverines are
content with their performance. It
was one of the first signs that the
squad has been making positive
strides. However, the fencers only
have to look at their performance
against Ohio State and Wayne
State to realize that they still have
a lot to learn.
