An engineer, photographed by Karen Moon Schaefer, strikes a pensive pose as he contemplates, "How do you stop this damn train?!" PHOTOS Continued frompage 5 intimacy of his photos. Schaefer's railway photographs seem delicately serene next to Pedit's explosive volcanos. Her realistic black-and-white pictures mostly dis- play kids and elderly folks juxta- posed with various train images. One photo, Abandoned Caboose shows a deserted timeworn Ann Ar- bor railway car surrounded by weeds. It calls forth nostalgia for an older era. This work, along with shots like Old Train Station which reveals the bowels of a whistle-stop, and Chicago Union Station which shows a single man modestly positioned among a row of enormous columns, all display a pleasing array of intri- cate shapes. However, some of the pieces such as On the Tracks Three which shows two kids playing a game be- fore a receding track, as well as the several superimposed images used, are a bit uninspiring and trite. Al- though cute, this shot seems unorig- inal. It could easily pass as a trendy dorm room poster. But most of her work demonstrates a tranquil reflec- tion upon the important railway crossing points throughout the Great Lakes region. PHOTOGRAPHS, BY KAREN MOON SCHAEFER AND BERN PEDIT is on display at the Ann Ar- bor Art Association, 117 W. Liberty through Saturday.
