The Michigan Daily - Sports Wednesday -January 9,1991- Page 7 No surprises for Cagers W ins, losses come as *expected by Theodore Cox Daily Basketball Writer Since final exam week began al- most a month ago, Michigan has been very predictable - winning ev- ery game it was expected to win, and losing every game it was predicted to lose. The Wolverines (7-5 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten) also kicked off their Big Ten season with losses to two of the league's strongest teams, Michigan State and Ohio State. Home teams are in caps. MICHIGAN 102, Chicago State 78 The Wolverines got off to a fast start, building an early 17-point lead. But they fell asleep on defense, allowing the Cougars to go on a 16- 2 run to end the first half with the score, 43-40, Michigan. "I told the team I had as much to do with the run as they did," Michi- gan coach Steve Fisher said. "I ap- proached Chicago State too casu- ally." In the second half, the Cougars weren't as lucky. Michigan domi- nated Chicago State behind guard Kirk Taylor's game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. IOWA STATE 81, Michigan 72 Center Victor Alexander proved to be too strong for Michigan's Eric .Riley. Alexander dominated the Wolverines, as Riley had to leave the game with a sprained ankle. Riley's injury forced captain Demetrius Calip and Taylor to pick -up the offensive slack. Taylor re- posU Continued from page 1 ines were seven of 16 form the free -throw line. "Our young kids have to de- liver," Michigan coach Steve Fisher said. "They have to respond and do *.a better job from the neck up. When it spattered we made some critical mistakes that good teams take advantage of." The first half, however, was a different story as the Wolverines showed how good they can be. Their interior defense was the strongest it has been all year. Every time a Buckeye posted up the ball -.down low, Michigan sent two play- ers to contain him. The Wolverines also did a great job of boxing out as the team pulled down 18 first-half rebounds. About the only thing they didn't do right was sink their shots. Michigan shot only 32 percent, and the usually consistent Eric Riley was only one for seven from the center position. Riley is going to have to shoot 4-better for the Wolverines to beat the tougher Big Ten teams. As the key to Michigan's inside game, when h.fe remains scoreless, opponents can play tighter defense on the perime- ter. "They played pretty good inte- rior defense, that made it difficult for us to get the ball inside," Talley said. "That's something we're go- ing to have to work on as a team." MICHIGAN 89, Marquette 81 Michigan took a 22-10 lead as the Wolverine guards were hitting from the outside. Paced by Calip's 15 first-half points, the Wolverines took control from the outset. But the second half was a differ- ent story as both Riley and forward Sam Mitchell fouled out allowing Marquette to pull within four points with 25 seconds left'in the game. MICHIGAN STATE 85, Michigan 70 This game belonged to the Spart- tans from the opening tip-off as Michigan State dominated the whole game. Within the first two minutes, Taylor shot an -airball, and matters never improved for Michigan as the Wolverines never held the lead. Center Mike Peplowski had his way, holding Riley to only five shots for the game. State superstar Steve Smith was his usual self, scoring 24 points. The only bright spot for Michi- gan was the return of forward James Voskuil to the Wolverine rotation. The junior hurt his ankle and had not seen action up until last Thursday. "It's been a long wait but I hope I can get back into the flow quickly," Voskuil said. Blks: 4 ( Powell 2. Mclvainc 2). Tumovers: 24. Steals: 2 (Hayes 1. Mclvainc 1).
