JONES Continued from page 5 combination of dance, music and commentary to create an ecstatic and life-affirming experience. Using such texts as Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Jones poses many points to ponder. The linkage of slavery and/or racism to Christianity can be seen in the portrayal of Uncle Tom as a religious slave owner. To continue this quandary, Jones will interview a local minister, asking perhaps whether s/he considers Christianity to be a slave religion or what s/he thinks of homosexuality. The conversation will be unre- hearsed. As in the rest of the evening, Jones will attempt to ap- proach his topics with honest curios- ity and an openness to all opinions. This discussion will segue into "The Last Supper," a piece based on Leonardo Da Vinci's painting that will also involve many people from the community. According to Lilly, who has been preparing Ann Arbor dancers/movers for the production for the past month, this final section is a way to bring forth an "image of the com- munity together." When asked to describe Jones, Lilly replied, "He's a man with a great deal of passion for his art... ar- ticulate... mercurial and not afraid of confrontation." While the evening will display an expanse of explosive movement and frightening interpreta- tions (in "Eliza on the Ice" four near- naked "dog-men" chase the character through her flight), the performance can also be described as an intellec- tual and philosophical quest. With his production, Jones seeks enlight- enment. It would be presumptuous to predict the effects of such a pro- duction on its audiences. However, one can be assured of coming away with questions of your own. BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE & CO. will perform THE LAST SUP- PER AT UNCLE TOM'S CABIN/ THE PROMISED LAND tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the Michigan Theater. Tickets are $18.50, $12.50 for stu- dents with valid ID. WRITE FOR ARTS! !! CALL 763-03791!!! RECORDS Continued from page 5 Branford's best playing. This album is tough to listen to. Marsalis is turbulent - always moving, always thinking, always listening to himself and his band- mates. He challenges himself to new heights on this release and he invites the listener to accept these challenges as well. However, you need not know the slightest thing about jazz in order to appreciate this record; you need only listen very carefully and with an open, mal- leable mind. -Ben Aquino AENNOUNCEMENTS Too busyto give Valentines?
