The Wolverines finished their trip by winning three of their first four Big Ten dual meets. Michigan coach Dale Bahr vis- ited the Spartans (2-3 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) knowing his squad was at a decided disadvantage at both 126 pounds and 167, and those turned out to be his only losses. "We are inexperienced at 126 and 167," Bahr said. "We came into the meet almost expecting to lose those*matches. But I was im- pressed with Mike (Mihalic, 126). His ankle looked pretty good and hopefully he will be completely healthy for the weekend." Michigan (8-3, 3-1) only strug- gled in two of the remaining eight matches as Lanny Green (177) de- feated Emilio Collins, 4-3, and Phil Tomek (HWT) decisioned Don Whipp, 7-6. The Wolverines were led by sophomores Joey Gilbert (134) and James Rawls (142), and seniors Salem Yaffai (118) and Fritz Lehrke (190). The featured match of the evening came at 158 pounds be- tween Michigan's Sean Bormet and the Spartans' Roy Hall. Three of Bormet's four defeats this sea- son have come at the hands of Hall. "Sean looked as good as he has all year," Bahr said. "1 think it was important for him to beat Roy and get that monkey off his back." The Wolverines took control of the individual matches in the latter stages by taking advantage of their superior conditioning. "We really have been stressing conditioning a lot this month," Bahr said. "We take three weeks off for exams and Christmas and only now are we getting back into full swing. "Our intensity was as high as it was at Las Vegas (the Wolverines placed fifth out of 41 teams). I think it was the deciding factor last night (Wednesday)," Bahr added. "We don't worry about over-practicing for dual meets be- cause we are looking to reach our peak in the Big Tens and NCAAs." In what looks to be an exciting weekend of wrestling, Michigan will host two nationally-ranked squads, Iowa State and Northwest- ern, today and tomorrow. Both op- ponents boast some of the top wrestlers in the country. The Wolverines enter the weekend fresh off a big victory against intrastate rival Michigan State and Michigan is ranked ninth nationally. Third-ranked Iowa State (6-0) is first up for the Wolverines tonight at Cliff Keen Arena. "They're an excellent team," Michigan coach Dale Bahr said. "They have pretty good personnel in every weight class." One of the better matchups of the night will come- in the 158- pound bout between Iowa State's Steve Hamilton and Michigan's Sean Bormet. Hamilton is an All- American and is currently ranked second in the nation. Bormet isn't far behind, ranked tenth. The key to this match, how- ever, lies in experience.vWhile Hamilton is a seasoned veteran, Bormet is only a redshirt frosh. "It should be a good match, al- though Hamilton, being a fifth-year senior and a returning All-Ameri- can, would definitely be favored," Bahr said. The Cyclones also have several other wrestlers who could pose problems for their Michigan coun- terparts. Dan Knight (126) and Torey Jackson (150) are both ranked third in the nation in their respective weight classes. And the upper weights, which Michigan has depended on in the past, will face stiff competition from the Cyclones. Wolverine Lanny Green will face the nation's fourth ranked 177-pounder in Matt Johnson (22-3). Fritz Lehrke (190) will wrestle Iowa State's Dan Troupe (23-7) for the second time this season, hav- ing already defeated Troupe in overtime at the Las Vegas Classic. And Michigan heavyweight Phil Tomek will have his hands full I Bormet with Todd Kinney (21-3-1). While he feels his team will put out the best effort possible Bahr thinks the Cyclones hold' bit of an advantage over Michigan. "They are a little more bal- anced than we are," he said. "They're putting out there ten wrestlers with pretty good records and we're putting out there seven kids with pretty good records." Tomorrow afternoon Northwest- ern visits Keen Arena in a Big Tena clash. The Wildcats are ranke* 22nd in the country with a 6-4- record, however, they are 0-16in the conference. "They've (Northwestern) really been banged up with injuries this year," Bahr said. "Fortunately; we've been fairly healthy and tt we can stay that way, we're prob- ably a better balanced team them they are.", All Interested Men are Invited to Attend Open Rush At: SIGMA NU 700 Oxford Serving Pizzeria Uno' s Sunday Night -w the 27th. Rocket Takes Off Raghib "Rocket" Ismail, Notre Dame's talented flanker, rusher and return specialist, said yesterday he would give up his final year of college football to enter the NFL draft. Ismail was a two-time All-American and runner-up for the 1990 Heisman Trophy. In three seasons, he returned five kickoffs for touchdowns, one short of the NCAA record by Southern Cal's Anthony Davis from 1970-72. Michigan fans are certainly glad to see him leave. He burned Michigan twice in 1989, returning kickoffs for scores, and his catch of a tipped pass last fall enabled the Irish to pull out their fourth consecutive victory over the Wolverines.
