ANNOIJNCEM ENTS Danny Elfman Music for a Darkened Theatre: Film and Television Music Volume One MCA Not since the days of Hitchcock soundtrack ace Bernard Herrmann - or perhaps Star Wars-era John Williams - has one film music composer so commanded the mo- ment on the Hollywood scene as Danny Elfman. Only five years af- ter scoring for his first major film, the relative newcomer now finds his soundtracks in demand for what seems to be all the biggest events of the hour - from 1989's mega- hype Batman to 1990's Dick Tracy, and even the theme for TV's The Simpsons. But the most surprising aspect of this erstwhile rocker's success - you'll probably remember the fire-haired singer as the video- friendly leader of nutty new-wavers Oingo Boingo - is the way he has almost singlehandedly brought the traditional sound of full-orchestra scoring back into vogue these days, despite the disturbing recent trend toward shoe-horning inciden- tal pop hits onto movie sound- tracks in search of lucrative MTV video tie-ins. Prince fans will remember that Elfman's dark, grand melodrama justifiably squeezed the Purple One's mostly incongruous pop out of the final cut for Batman, and an eight-minute excerpt of it is featured among the 17 scores sam- pled on Music for a Darkened The- atre, Elfman's first film-music compilation. The 70-minute CD also presents score material that was either slighted itself in cinematic release (Scrooged), or never widely distributed (such as music for Elfman's brother's 1980 cult film Forbidden Zone). Although its tracks are arranged in a sequence that lends itself less to a coherent listening experience than to point- ing up contrasts, the tailored vari- ety of Elfman's efforts is surpris- ing, ranging from slapstick animal comedy (such as the accordion on Hot to Trot) to horror (the blended chants and tribal drums of Night- breed) and road-rally blues (found in the Ry Cooder-like slide guitar and saloon piano for Midnight Run). But Elfman's greatest affinity throughout is to the almost expressionistic extremes offered by classic orchestra. His weighty melodramatic turns (Batman, Darkman, Tracy) dangle wonder- fully on the verge of an almost comic grand-ness. It is in whimsi- cal films like Beetlejuice and the two Pee Wee flicks (both directed by primary patron Tim Burton, whose recent fairy-tale Edward Scissorhands received a master- fully music-box treatment worth looking for on Volume Two) that Elfman seems most comfortable with his range. In the context of an actual cartoon, such as his classic theme for The Simpsons, Elfman can apply the whole set of sound codes found in orchestra to make music a special effect in ways forgotten since the days of Carl Stalling's classic Bugs Bunny scores. And as soon as you catch the allusions to Herrmann, Gershwin and Satie on other cuts, you may find that Elfman had already pointed them out to you in his succinct and useful liner notes. Elfman's Music is not just an indispensable reference for film composers, but also a economical memory trigger for fans of these various films - and, more impor- tantly, an assertion that film music can still be made to create moods as well as money. Michael Paul Fischer Danny Elfman is destined to be the John Williams of the '90s, and he likes to play with toys, too. _ _ , _ , RECORDS Continued from page 5 doesn't allow the songs to attain the level of catchiness of most house music, there is more going on here than meets the ear. With each listening, one will notice new things hidden in the mix. Such a level of subtlety may not be ap- preciated or realized in distracting dance clubs, but Digital Dump comes across well when cranked up loud at home. Sometimes it's difficult to tell if the Jackofficers are mocking dance music or saluting it. Even their very name could indicate that they think electronic music is, as the old guy from the movie Fame put it, musical masturbation. Of course, these are the same people who named their other band the Butthole Surfers. And if they don't like dance music, they sure went to an awful lot of trouble to come up with a record that's better than most of it. But in the end, who knows? These guys do have a strange sense of humor. And who cares? As the song "Love-O- Matic" says, "Feel the music in your gut/ get up and move your butt."- M -Mike Molitor FLIGHT Continued from Page 5 that Dafoe, Glover and Rosanna Arquette are eager to ruin .their reputations. Arquette plays Callie, and is the most solid example of the poor way Intruder is put together. She would be perfect for role of love interest of a guy who has nothing to live for, but she can act, and the script doesn't provide enough char- acter for her to get a hand on. Flight of the Intruder does have some interesting special effects and gives the viewer an idea of what our planes are up against in kaq. See FLIGHT at Showcase. I I Zoo Continued from page 5 during the first act that, by the second, became so amorphous as to signal her character's destruc- tive drug habit and sense of self defeat. In watching both player's natural motions and intonations, I was able to suspend my disbelief all the way into their dorm room. All discourse flowed with the verisimilitude of natural conversa- tion. In addition, intimate atmo- sphere of the small audience al- lowed for a communication of that cramped dorm room effect. Aside from its combination of funny and grave situations, and sardonic dialogue that really hits the mark,The Zoo Zoo, Chronicles did not simply come across as a tale of four women grappling with politics, death, sexuality, and love. The fervor of Bryant's play is derived not only from the talents of the performers and the director, but in its lack of contextual boundaries. THE ZOO ZOO CHRONICLES plays again this weekend at the Performance Network, tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30.
