STATE
Continued from p. 5
but we must not outlaw the music of
laughter or the tenacity of music's
sinisterness either. In the poem
"Lapis Lazuli," William Butler
Yeats wrote: "One asks for mournful
melodies/ Accomplished fingers be-
gin to play./ Their eyes mid many
wrinkles, their eyes,/ Their ancient,
glittering eyes, are gay."
As I observed the various rallies
that have taken place around campus
so far, each promoting a different
view of the conflict, I noticed a uni-
fying trend - song. Music was a re-
curring entity in all of them. Use the
music - holler, dance, cry, sing and
unleash your anger with it. It's a
presence, not a preference, con-
tained within the art; it's liberating.
As we momentarily free ourselves
(and don't feel guilty for it), there is
an intoxicating realization. The mu-
sic unveils the answers. We are the
New Power Generation.
