FOR CENTURIES the Monastery ! d
of St. Catharine below the
peak of Mt. Sinai has contained a
magnificent treasure of Byzantine
art seen only by the few scholars
who have traveled there.
This year an expedition of UM,
Princeton University and Alexan-
dria Unicersity scholsrs and tech-
nicians returned from the Egyp-
tain site with a photographic
record of the 3,000 illuminated
manuscripts, 2,000 icons and
unique architectural forms.
It is the only place where there
is an appreciable number of icons
from the sixth and eighth cen-
turies and from the Middle Byzan-
tine period of the ninth and
twelfth centuries. 4

T HE MONASTERY also contains
one of the finest medieval li-
braries ever found.
St. Catharines' marks a sacred
spot for Judaism, Christianity and
Islam. Inside the monastery walls
stands a Greek Orthodox Church,
the Chapel of the Burning Bush
and a Moslem mosque.
If the Mohammedan conquest
had tot isolated the Monastery
during the seventh century, many
of the icons probably would have}
been destroyed by the Byzantine
emperor during the Iconoclastic
controversy of the eighth and
ninth century

Monastery's basilica (church) is ornately decorated with hanging
icons and ostrich ergs. On right is throne for Abbott of Monastery.
