SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 195 I PAGE 12 THE MICHIGAN DAILY 'U' MUSICOLOGIST: Prof. Cuyler Plays Parts of Author, Teacher, Reviewer I I (Continued from Page 7) while doing research, and conduct- ed negotiations between the Uni- versity and Stellfield's heir, Ma- dame von Strydonck. Prof. Cuyler has held several positions in national music groups. She is National Secretary for the American Musilogical Society, and is past chairman of the Musicolo- gy Section of the Music Teacher's National Association. "Many of the country's leading music scholars are active members of these groups," Prof. Cuyler commented, "and association with these people is both rewarding and stimulating." For the past six years, Prof. Cuy- ler has been doing an average of eight to 10 music reviews yearly for the Ann Arbor News. She usu- ally does at least half of the May Festival coverage and most re- cently reviewed the local perform- ances of both the Budapest String Quartet and the Robert Shaw Chorale. "I've always dabbled a bit in journalism, so I enjoy writing these reviews. Being critical does ham- per the enjoyment, but self-disci- pline will combine both pleasure and criticism." AMONG the world's noted musi- cians and composers, Prof. Cuyler has come into contact with Howard Hanson, Emmanuel Bala- ban. Francesco Malipiero and Ralph Vaughan Williams. She knew both Hanson and Bal- aban during her student days at Eastman and visited Malipiero in Italy for three days. "The Malipiero's told me that I could get a bus from Padua to take me to their home in Asolo, 14 miles away. It was in March or April, and I found out that busses didn't start running until June. "So I hired a taxi and I don't think we went over one road. The driver went through fields and al- leys and when we finally got to Asolo I was so relieved I gave him a huge tip." She met Vaughan Williams when tie lectured here last fall. Even though Prof. Cuyler ha such a time-consuming position o the faculty, she manages to kee playing. "While I was in Bel gium, I had fiddle lessons durin the week." "Here in town, I get in some vi olin and piano sonatas every Sun- day morning with Prof. Maud( Okkelberg who recently retirec from the music faculty." "As for the future, I always let the future shape itself and not worry about it. There's so much ahead that I want to do," ES riraic! r i COTTON IDOESIKIN COORDIINAT BY REGENT LIMITED Jrt §vtan J/ccenLedwdf !§acl4 aI/4/'at or (""avij V iii. &S _t , E 4 I, " w I t fi y r r BOY SHORT 3.95 DOESKIN BERMUDA SHORTS 5.95 CAPRI PANTS 7.95 SKIRT 5.93 BLOUSE 5.95 PLAID TOP 3.95 PLAID BLOUSE 3 95 NOT ILLUSTRATED . , .
