STRATFORD:O
By JEAN WIT LOLTIihIY
THE SMALL towns and cities in
North America have, for many
years, threatened to become a
vanishing institution. Surpassed
by Suburbia in leisuse and con-
veniencr, the closely knit, crack-
er-barret co imuitie~is of our
rural forehbearslihtve all but eisap-
peared. Some ot these have stir-
ctimbed to uibin anmai"gamation;
oitiers, nsumtberect by a gradual de -
crease in populations,litre re-

faded retics of a soimewhsat illus-
trious tpast, inhabited by ancient
gentlemen and cutivated by vis-
iting matronis for thseir quaint and
dusty atmospheres.
Still other tos, however, more
eag'er to retain their itndependence
and auitonoimy, haive suiccessfully
combatted oblivion by catrefuilvy

- commsiftee at citizeiss decided
to bring a group of promissent
actors to thse toswis std to tint on,
on a trial basis, Shiakespeareass
dramsa ins a tent. The idea was a
phenonsenal success; the festival
immediately became an annual
towsn project. As the productions
in creased in ouality, the tootsr
increased iii size and tse format
Iof the festisal expanded.
In 1957, the Stratford Shake-
spearean Festivaal included t w o
plays, Bamlet and Twelfth Night,
a jaze festival, a drama school, sit
art exhibit, an internationsal film
exhibition, setveral 'weeks of seri-
ous music with Benjamin Britten
conduictinig his own opera, "The
Turn of the Screw," and a musical
spoof, put on by McGill University
students and entitled 'My Fur
Lady."
Apipasrently, hsowever, the Festi-
vol is not entisrely successful as a
money-making phenomenon. Al-
though a striking permanent thea-
ter has been built within the last
year to take the place of else ori-
ginat tent, authsorities have founsd
tliot the jazz cosscerts are the only
