One cannot fully appreciate his
chivalry unless it is remembered
that there is no central heating
system in Japanese homes, not

this pattern a wife is significant
to her husband as a woman per se
rather than a woman in her role
of housewife and mother. This
pattern seems to be found often
in the upper classes. Many hus-
bands and wives in the United
States remind me of this pattern,
sometimes even of its extreme
form; the attractiveness of a wife
to her husband is primarily physi-
cal, thus leading to extreme con-
cern and anxiety of wives over
aging.
The fourth pattern may be
called the companion pattern.
I suspect this pattern is predomi-
nantly found in the United States.
Husband and wife stand on their
own feet, help each other in the
pursuit of their own interests and
cultivation of character and yet
cooperate in establishing their
life. This pattern is found and
easily understood among young
