Critique (Continued from Page Three) ; Even the sedate, singingrhyme has] given way to verse that is more free; from the restrictions of conventional poetry. "Home Burial" is an excellent bit of writing. It recalls an episode in Knut Hamsun's, book, "Growth of the Soil". But "Al Servant to Servants" is the poem which most' intrigues me. It touches on tha't vast field so little t touched by any writer of merit - the ) true American peasantry. Here one - glimpses the real story, devoid of, - sentiment and stage humor. It doesn'tj 8 cover all the field by any means, but - one sees briefly the sad lot, the drudg-' t ery, the wistfulness of the farm r wife. To my knowledg no other, - poet has quite approached Frost here. - "Blueberries", "The Housekeeper", f. "The' Fear" are others worthy of more f than mention, but space presses.: The h second of the three mentioned is espe- - cially fine, its theme resembling that of "A Servant to Servants". e Second Volume Is Best e In "Myuntain Interval", his third - book, I find "The Oft Repeatedj h Dream", "The Hill Wife". In "An Old Man's Winter Night", he ap- proches the irksome chant of Whit- tier's "Snowbound". All in all, I be-- lieve that Frost's second volume is his best. The anthologies show sev- eral poems from various magazines. "Not to Keep", from the Yale Re- view, is one of them. When all is said and done, the University is to be congratulated on securing the presence of Robert l Frost. He is one of the best Ameri- can poets. Here is hoping that the desired "atmosphere" will offset some of our sozzly local ideals. Suggests Other Selections As I recall, it is the University'sl intention to secure successively the same service of other leaders, of sculptors, novelists, dramatists, schol- ars. It is to be hoped that the other selections will be as well consider- ed. What about Theodore Dreiser, the forerunner of . the "moddrn" American novelist; or O'Neill, the dramatist; what about' Lorado Taft, as good a sculptor as America, has produced; what about Henri as an ar- tist? As for scholars, perhaps we have them here. I V Lt I. N fl I . SECOND -HAN'D BO FOR AL.L DEPA'RTMENTS SUMMER SCHOOL STUDENTS will find the Right Prices at 0 _W A H UNIVERSITY BOOK STORES .
