E TO No ex- Managing Editor THE ANIMAL FAIR Crazes may come and crazes may go, but the movies go on forever; and with the fluctuations in their type will come changes, and we hope improve- ments, in the class of humor which is placed before the public. For a considerable time the riotous character of the slap-stick hero and the nine-lived villain has produced howls of laughter from the youthful and -rnay we say it ?-the mentally infirm, while in- variably inducing a state of utter boredom on the spectator who occasionally enjoys a bit of clever art. No one ever accused the modern so-called "comedy" of being art; aside from the occasional mirth-provoking ridiculousness of the thing, we sel- dom have any reason even to call it funny. Of late, however, secondary comedy types seem to have begun to change, and trained animals are rapidly coming to take the place of the custard pie, the paint bucket, and the unruly fire hose. One craze is on the wane, and another is coming in. The animal show eventualy may become as tiresome a bore as the old custard-slining. But, for the pres- ent, the introduction of the world-renowned baboon' and the not-to-be-equalled houn' dog furnishes a change in the type of movie humor, and perhaps a ,change for the better. At least, we are quite ready for any relief that may be offered us. The funeral of the slap-stick will be celebrated with applause and song. It is th a proposal upon which early action can be taken and it from which early and satisfactory results niay be reasonably hoped. Had the very foolish attempt of house leaders to include land armament prevailed, wee should have got nothing, whereas the British andAmerican governments, if they work together. can, with Japan's participation, bring about a sta- bilization in the naval situation in the Pacific which le -will be the best of all guaranties against an early st. recurrence of war.. It is also not impossible, and may even be called a probable, that from these negotiations may flow ng other agreements as to our relations in the far east in which will remove existing international friction and evolve a modus vivendi conducive to progress >m and peace. .y These reasonable hopes would have been dashed ale by a surrender to the impracticable demands of gen- eral disarmament theorists, whose want of grasp of v- the difficulties of international relations cannot be ler corrected by experience. We congratulate Senator s1 Borah and those who have supported him on the he persistent fight for a practicable plan, and the Pres- 1es ident upon having now an opportunity for initiat- ing, if not consummating, a momentous advance in critical international relations. The other remained silent, so the stammerer re- peated his question. Still no answer.
