STIMULATE INTEREST IN INDUSTRIAL AFFAIRS Endeavoring to stimulate an inter- est in the nation's economic problems, Hart Schaffner & Marx, clothing man- ufacturers of Chicago, have offered four prizes aggregating $2,000 for the best studies in topics relating to com- merce and industry. The prizes are offered through a committee of which Prof. Henry C. Adams of the econom- ics department of the University, is a member. Four Others on Committee The four others on the committee are: Prof. J. Laurence Laughlin of Chdago, chairman; Prof. J. B. Clark, Columbia university; Theodore E. Burton, New York City; Edwin F. Gay, president of the New York Eve- nling. Post, graduate of the University in 1890. The prizes are divided into two sets, one set class B, being limited to the undergraduates of all American col lege , and the ~Dther set, class A, standing open to all others, whether college graduates or not. The two prizes open to college undergraduates are: First prize, $300, second, prize, $200, while the two open to the gen- eral public are $1,000 and $500. Six Topics Suggested Six topics suggested by the com- mittee are: 1. The economic effects of the ac- cumulation of gold by the United States during the European war. 2. .A study of the policy of the Fed-I eral reserve board during the war. 3. The course of foreign exchange between the. United States and neutral countries during the war and the per- iod of re-adusmejnt. 4. The probable future of the skill- ed artisan. 5. The effect of the European war on the export trade of Great Britain.' 6. The development of the world's' production of meat. In addition to these subjects, others may be chosen by the contestants through securing the consent of the! committee. NEWTON GOES OVER UNION'S FALL PLANS: Maynard Newton, '22, chairman of the Union life membership committee for 1921, was in the city yesterday, and while here he went over plans for next year with Union officials. As' now formulated, the plans call for an extensive drive in the fall, which will end with a great percentage of the students life members of the Union. Tentative details were discussed, and possible team captains consider- ed.
