Work on this has been halted, due to the in- creased building expense, although an appropriation has been made. These developments of the last year all show the trend of events, and it is highly possible that more such men of the type -of Whipple, will be added in a short time. The advent of suchedu- cators would tend to strengthen the Michigan educational faculty immeas- urably, and make it one of the strong- est in the country.' In proportion as quantity and qual- ity of the teaching staff is developed, Just so will the quality and number of courses be bettered. There has been a demand throughout the state that a greater variety of studies for teachers be offered during the sum- mer, and this is being hearkened to. In time it is highly probable that the high school and grade teachers will be able to find a more excellent course at Michigan than can be secured at any other Summer session. Courses Not Extended The tendency at Michigan has been to refrain from teaching anything not given in the regular year, but Colum- bia, California, and Chicago have greatly extended their curriculum to include even such things as basketry and kindergarten work. While the courses here have not yet been so ex- tended, it is evident that something on this order should be done soon, al- though perhaps not on such a great scale. . a4 Changes and advances in the edu- cational department will soon come even more than in the last five years, it is expected. For the past five years there has been a steady growth in the summer school. Each year there has been an increase, except during the war pe- riod, when attendance naturally fell off. If the growth is at all proportion- ate, the expected 3,500 should be at- tained. If the wants of this group are satis- fied, it is practically certain that the highest expectations will be realized. To a casual observer it would seem that Michigan has an insurmountable obstacle to meet in competing with Co- lumbia, Chicago, California, and Wis- consin. In all these schools except Wisconsin there is the attraction of a large city and the consequent num- ber of excursions and trips to be made, and at Wisconsinrthere is the lure of the summer resort In a certain measure it might be said that Michigan had the advantages of a large city without its disadvan- ANN ARBOR DAIRY COMPANY Corner North 4th and Catherine Phone 4 MILK BUTTERMILK CREAN tages. Within a 50 minutes' ride of Detroit, Ann Arbor is just as close to a large city as Columbia, Chicago, and California, and it enjoys the privileges, of a small town, which include a lower cost of living, a greater university spirit, and a cooler city. When the opportunities of a Sum- mer course at Michigan become more widely known and the advantages of this city are perceived, it can hardly be doubted that the Summer session will be phenomenal and exceptionally large.
