Again the win- broad, jump finds him weak, but he wsnd is good for around 19 feet. , use, With the departure of Dunne and Baker for Brooklyn yesterday, Cap- tain-elect Larry Butler and Steve Far- rel are the only track men left on Ferry Field. Twice daily Steve is working out the 1921 captain, and get- ting him into the best of condition for the 440 finals at Harvard July 17. No word has been received from Carl Johnson, who is in Spokane, as to when he was returning, but before leaving the team in Chicago, Carl as- sured Steve that he would be back by the end of next week for a few days' workout before leaving for Boston. Farrel Still Undecided As yet Coach Farrel has not decided whether he will make the trip to Ant- werp, but it is most improbable that Steve will be unable to resist the call of the greatest track meet in eight years. No Olympic coaches have been picked yet, and he itay stand a chance to go either as a coach or a -traner, but the Olympic committee being most- ly Eastern men, it is probable that they will still think the East is best, overlooking one of the best coaches in the co untry at Michigan. Keene Fitzpatrick at Princeton, Rob- inson at Pennsylvania, and Oakley at Cornell, are apparently the most fa- vored for the honored positions, }1ut as Steve is placed among the. country's big five'in track coaches, he stands a good chance., Two Left If Dunne and Baker do not place in the finals at Brooklyn tomorrow, Mich- igan's chances for the Olympic team will be narLowed to two men, Johnson and Butler. Baker,'who qualified for the finals in the shot put, has not madeE gobd enough records to justify his being sent to Cambridge, where at i least five men will compete who have done better than 45 feet. Baker's best being 44 feet with gnly five or six men to be picked caused the Athletic asso- ciation to reach this decision. Johnson, who can do 24 feet when in shape, may be expected to work hard {for the squad, attainment of which will be the culmination of the great ath- lete's career. He can be depended upon to do his best in the last.chance which he will probably have for competition.- Judging from the relative time,; But- ler is in line for a place on the squad. I He was second man in the Western meet, and the time in the East was 3-5t of a second slower than at Chicago. In the far West a slightly better record was made. At the present time the world does not possess a man like Jim Thorp was in the, pentathlon or decathlon, for he was not beaten in any of these events in 1912. The United States will have to depepd upon a man who can make his average good, and it would not be improbable if Baker or Dufe of Michigan would be one of these. "Germany" Schultz, '06, who played for three years on Michigan's great championship team in the first days 'of Yost's regime, and who was picked by Walter Camp for the position of center on his all time All-American eleven, has been made director of ath- letics at the University of Tulane at New Orleans, It is probable that the one time Michigan star will coach football and assume a general direction over the other athletic activities of Tulane, particularly in track, in which he has done some coaching. The appointment of Schultz to this position is of particular interest, since Tulane has a game with Michigan Ogtober 30, this year, and it will bring into conflict, 'Yost, the teacher, and Schultz, the pupil. From 1912 to 1915 Schultz was line coach at the University, and since then he has been football coach at the Kan- sas State Agricultural college, where -he has turned out strong elevens.
