JACOBI, FAMOUS MEDICAL AUTHORITY, DIES IN NEW YORK be seen the club's motto written in the native scripts of all the members. Some of the most common scripts seen are those of China, Japan, India, France, Italy, and Spain. There 2.re also many representatives of other nations who are members of the club and whose signatures may be seen. The main purpose of the club is ex- pressed in the motto. It is that of unit- ing the students from the many na- tions by this common trait of human- ity. The organization holds weekly meetings at which special programs are given. These consist of exercises and talks by the various members on subjects pertaining to their respective countries. The Cosmopolitan club, however, has another purpose and that is being loyal to Michigan, and this is observed by the members in spreading her fame and glory throughout their native lands. GRUEN WATCHES SILVERWARE CUT GLASS LEATHER GOODS ALARM CLOCKS FOUNTAIN PENS FINE JEWELRY AND WATCH REPAIRING HALLER FULLER r in social hygiene and education as a means of arriving at the greatest good for both Italy and America is the object of a plan projected by Dr. Wil- liam C. White, of Pittsburgh, head of the American Red Cross commission on tuberculosis for Italy. Dr. White believes that what America could give to Italy in the way of constructive social welfare suggestions would be offset by Italy's successful adventures in the realm of industrial training. "There is no doubt that Italy could furnish enough ideas for American as- similation to more than provide for the "balance of trade" in this ex- change," said Dr. White. "We have found that Italy has made immense progress in education and can truly teach us many lessons. On the other hand she can learn from us methods of social hygiene, sanitation and so- cial welfare which at present she has hardly developed. Real Exchange "Thereccould be established between the two countries a real exchange of these factors which mean so much in the lives of the industrial groups. Be- fore the war, America received more than 500,000 Italians a year. If these had come to America with American standards of housing, sanitation and all the innumerable things which American . workmen enjoy, America would have been spared the money and effort of having to educate the Italians in these ideas in America. Business Proposition The whole thing is a reasonable business proposition. If we expect to draw a vast labor supply from Italy, then it is to our interest to see that we handle our human exchange in a human and economic way. We would save money by organizing in Italy American methods for social ills. The Italians would do it themselves and need only to be shown the way. Be- sides the missionary side of it, the sacrifice side of it, there is truly a business side and it is truly American business. America is in the poten- tial position to cary on this work in Italy and to get in return its vast trade and its own experiences in successful industrial training schools."
