Parmenter SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1918 WHAT ABOUT NEXT YEAR? Michigan and other universities will be in a bad situation next year if present indications are any sign. With enlistments of college students con- tinuing at their present rate, and a change in the draft law imminent, the enrollment, at Michigan for next year will be below the four. thousand mark unless radical measures are taken to increase it. This figure is not mere guesswork, but is the estimate of men on the campus who are in position to know. It has been the rule for men, choos- ing between giving actual service for their country and remaining in school, to elect the former. It is difficult for anyone who is physically able, to re- main out of the fight while our Al- lies are being pressed 'hard on that western front. But there is another side to the question, and one that re- quires earnest thought and delibera- tion. Colleges and universities must be maintained. While it is, important for the army and navy to pave their full share of men, it is equally important to have such trained and educated men. If the war~ should drag on for four or five years more-and there are few who will deny that this is a pos- sibility-it will be absolutely impera- tive that these highly trained men shall be available. It may be difficult for men to real- ize this, and more difficult for them to stay in the University while so many of the men they know are in the serv- ice. But it is a patriotic duty. Edu- cated men, especially those in the pro-, fessions, are to play a big part, not only in the war itself, but also in the period of reconstruction that will fol- low. Where would we be five years from now if we had no doctors, no educated and trained men? It is the duty of every Michigan stu- dent to return in the fall if he possi- bly can. It is his duty to take up some line of work that will be of use to his country, to be a part of the great army behind the fighting line. And it is his duty to bring others with him. ,A large part in the war must be play- ed by highly trained men which only the colleges can ,provide. He is no slacker who is studying that he may be fit for future service. Let each Michigan man pledge him- self to return in the fall, and let him pledge likewise that he will bring at least one new student back with him. -Michigan Daily.
