Parmenter THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 1918 FAVORITISM AND COLLEGE MEN Although college maen have been fav- ored by the draft board in its rulings, and by both the army and navy in its selections for officers, there is reason behind the whole course, and the fav- oring has not been because there was any desire to pamper them. The prob- lem before the country has not been the creating of millionstofsoldiers, but the finding of the thousandofo officers needed to train and handle them efficiently. The college and uni- versity was the natural place to get officers, since it was fair to assume that the more intelligent and higher trained young men would be found there. To prove the justice of the assumption it is only necessary to go the records of the training camps, and to France, for the college man has proven to the country that almost universally he is sound and to be trusted in emergency.
