Gleason Herbert Hobart Business jWilliam Wachs .........Assistant SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1918 FALSE WAR REPORTS Thursday night there was posted on the window of a local place of busi- ness a dispatch reputed to be from an Ann Arbor evening newspaper that declared the Crown Prince of Ger- many had been captured with 500000, men-that all escape had been cut off. This report spread rapidly all over town, not only through Ann Arbor proper, but also through the Univer- sity section. Dispatches in the morn- ing papers discredited the reputed capture to the extent of saying that the mouth of the pocket had been so narrowed that the Allies were enabled to sweep it with shell fire. There was no mention of the Crown Prince being in the pocket. Neither did the evening paper dispatches say so. Whether or not the Crown Prince is there is of little concern, except in the effect his capturg might have on German morale. It is sae to say his capture would be no great loss to the German morale. It is safe to say his concern that any one should spread the report that he was made prisoner, together with his army. Such news is bound to raise the spirits of all loyal Americans to a high pitch, and when the truth is learned, there is a corres- pondingly great pychological reaction of disappointment. Such incidents al- so lead to the discrediting of the press. The common observation "that's just newspaper talk" is directly the re- sult of such experiences. The Amer- ican newspapers are making a record in this war for truthfulness in war news, although some are guilty of over-playing. Such posted dispatches are not conducive to a continuance of such a record, at least locally. No loyal American will knowingly spread any war reports or rumors which he does not have good reason to believe are true, and heresay is poor guarantee of truth. Much Ger- man propaganda is carried by people who would rather be an interesting source of information than a loyal American. Thoughtlessness is at the bottom of most of it, but that is no excuse. Watch your tongue and in- tern it if it gives evidence of being an enemy alien. Engiineers Sally Forth To Dance (By "Bak Fly") Thursday evening after dinner, ten of our Romeos shook the moth-balls from their Kuppenheimers, harvested the cropo from their faces, and em- barked in a couple of Ford Chariots for Cheboygan. The occasion for afl of these unuusal proceedings was the Red Cross Dance at Fay Hall. They all weathered the cruise as well as could be expected and stepped out on the floor just as though they were used to it. The evening was spent in romping on the feet of the buxom natives, who must of heard of our fame at the ter- psichorean art, and had come from miles around to see us perform. The music was furnished by a regular artist who played a violin and pumped a player piano with his feet in perfect unison. "Bill" Dorrance missed sev- eral "rounds" watching to see that he didn't fall to sleep and drop his fiddle. "Tommy" Garrett was the big attrac- tion of the evening with the women. He even had a bell-boy paging him before the affair was half over. All returned to camp and wer afely tucked in their trundle beds bys9:0 P. . (?) The first "Sing" took place Friday evening, July 12, at the "Michigan Union." Under the apt leadership of "Doc" Stouffer we wheezed and gargled our Camp Davis songs. We haven't received any complaints from the "Bug Camp" or any place else around the lake, so it must have at least sounded good at a distance.
