If the lazy layman knew the work expended in the writing of a good book, it is likely that he would give it a trifle more consideration; he might be more prone to listening to a good sermon, if he realized that the preach- er had studied over it, and had put a little of his life into its construction. The man who strips to the waist and shovels in the coal is the best qualified to appreciate the motive power of steam engines. When the fussing dilletante cracks] peanuts at football games next fall, and is careful about clapping his hands or indulging in other undue exertion, for fear of breaking the stem from her chrysanthemum, it is not likely that he will think for a second of the coal- shoveling process of the football "pro- fession." Thetest of the football man does not come next fall on the gridiron, before the eyes of thousands of silly spectators. The real gridiron test comes now, in the middle of July, the hottest time of the year. The hub of next fall's team is down on Ferry field this summer, everyday, preparing for next fall's schedule. Summer foot- ball requires nerve which is nerve and energy which is concentrated vigor. So when you tuck the blanket about your girl at the game next fall, to pro- tect her from the chilling October winds, let your mind whisk back to the middle of sweaty July, to the center of dripping hotness, when real football was being played. Foreigners Eat Hawaian Roast Pig A large crowd of cosmopolites jour- neyed to Whitmore lake Saturday for their first summer picnic. T. Y. Seto, '16L, furnished the pig, and President Achi roasted it in true Hawaian style. The day was spent in swim- ming and boat racing. Cosmopolitans Extend Lecture Service At a recent meeting of the Cosmo- politan club, it was decided to extend the services of the cosmopolitan ex- tension lecture course, and to increase the variety of the lectures. These lectures probably will be given next winter in different cities, one being given every night for a whole week. The club has already been asked by the Women's Federation of clubs of three of the largest cities in the state. to send them the foreign lecturers. Electric fixtures for sale.
