MEN AND I387S WOMENMAKE SOCIETfY This Number H* ve Been Elecied to Phi Beta Kappa During Last Three Years In the Phi Beta Kappa elections of the past three years, women have cap- tured an aggregate of 1,979 places to 2,202 for men. The reason assigned is that men, more often than women, take an intense interest in athletics and other activities of college life, rather than in scholarship. An article in the Phi Beta Kappa Key reports an issue which is a mat- ter of much contention. The question arose as to whether the presence of so many women in the chapter did not endanger its reputation. To save this reputation, it was advocated that other tests be' introduced and that these tests should be other than scholastic distinction. Although it was not specified what these tests should be, it was evident that they should be in- tentionally discriminatory against women. A special committee was appointed to coisider the limiting of the propor- tion of women to be elected and to re- port to the next council in 1919. f i 1 i, .i r- Masons at Work on Old Building Construction work on the old School. of Music is progressing rapidly.
