Summer students come to work. They don't expect a vacation. The chief elements of a vacation that enter in, for a school teacher, let us say, come from the change afforded by campus life and from the chance offered for enlarging one's ring of friendships. Social activities form a big part of the yong undergraduate's career in regular university session. Yet social life was never intended to predominate in the short term. No such high sense of solidarity is possible among the student body in July as there is in January when spirit has been inflated by football enthusiasm. But working toward a sort of group consciousness in the summer is both possible and commendable, especially when one considers the chances for getting acquainted. And as an indi- vidual the summer student is almost invariably a "good scout." There will soon be a mass meeting for men interested in summer base- ball. Informal entertainments or get- acquainteds have already been started for the women. Besides many other specific opportunitiesfor meeting more people, there are, in boarding houses, rooming houses, and class rooms, in- finite friendships waiting and eager to be gripped out from non-existence. GAP FILLERS OF THE PAST "Recent Graduate Plans to Murder." The nasty thing!l "The rhetoric faculty will scatter widely for the summer" We take it they "rode madly in both directions at once." "Dean Jordan granted a full profes- sorship" "Insanity forms lecture subject." We often suspected as much. "Whitney praises summer school." Yeah? "Elsie Kearns makes her debut in title role of Hamlet." Clever girl, Elsie! More next time. Don't grieve. W. SEABURY AC('EPTS JOB WIlE EIISON COMPANY Warner Seabury, '17E, has accepted a positinowith the Edison company of Detroit for the summer. Unitarian Church State and Huron Streets Sunday, at 10:30 ROBERT S. LORING, Minister Evolution and the Idea of God Violin Solo by Miss Marion Soruble Nichigrins .Fiance--Ali, darling, when will the blessed day come? Fiancee (pulling out the thing that made the dollar famous)-It ought to be here now. Doc-Madam, your son has lockjaw. Mother (registering anguish and business of wringing hands)-Hlow doctor, how in the world did he get it? Doe-Me kept his mouth open while dancing willh girls who hat their hair cut like Irene Castle. N. Y. Feminist (to census taker)- My name? Mary Mea. Census Taker (late of Berea)-Ding bust it, out our way the fellers hev t' say thet. Campus Necessities A "Fountain of Youth" for the more mature. A seven bell jitney for the seven o'clocks. One of Doc May's showers in every class room. A trip through the campus gives a strong impression that the University is conducting a course in trench build- ing. Or do they call it digging? Take your pick. Is that "Where are your valuables" sign supposed to be a joke? The exceptionally large number en- rolled in the various courses in re- ligion diti'st have any noticeable effect on the attend'cec at prayer meeting the other night. Some one suggested that excellent use might be made of the campus fountain by placing bunches of tea leaves and soft lemons just below the place where the waters emerge. "A patrolman has been appointed to compel students to wear bathing suits while bathing below the pond. In ad- dition to this all disorderly conduct is tabooed."-That Wolverine. In view of this statement, we rise to inquire, what is disorderly conduct? NO UNION DANCES THIS SUMMER Present Condition of Quarters Will Not Permit, Says Iomer eah No dances will be given this sum- mer at the Michigan Union. Homer L. Heath, manager of the Union, gives as the reason the poor condition of the building which, on account of the recent moving and the improvements that are under way, is in no shape for such affairs. In past summers the popularity of canoeing has been so great as to make attendance at the dances rather small. It is thought with the present condi- tion of the new Union quarters and the popularity of canoeing, that dances this summer would hardly prove a sue cess. a I .. ..
