In Germany, when a miner leaves the surface of the earth to delve under-ground, his comrades call to him, "Gluck auf.' "Gluck anf" signifies "Goodluck.' So today we call "Gluck auf" to you seniors, over a thousand strong, who are leaving the surface to search the depths. For your life at the university has been a surface life, fraught with arti- ficialities. Now you will face the underlying realities. Tomorrow you will be at the bot- tom of the mine's shaft. Daylight will appear far above you. You will grope about for the ladder leading to the surface. Perhaps some of you al- ready have your hands on the first rung. If you can keep your fingers from under the feet of the man above you, and your heels from the eager grasp of those below, the rise to the surface will be a rapid one. We hope that it is a rapid one,- and a happy one. So, seniors, here's to you-- "Gluck auf!" THE ALUMNI. All this week they have been arriv- ing, and now they are with us hun- dreds strong. From Kankakee and New York city they have come. Each of them bears the indelible Michigan stamp. "Michigan" is sing- ing in their hearts and shining on their faces. For they are Michigan- the university. Last Sunday, Dr. Angell showed us that the undergraduate body is ne the university. Neither are tf-a zaid- ings the university.
