Extra men will be put on the job, and the work forced along in an attempt to recover some of the lot time, as the contractorsmweretalready behind schedule. But slight inceonveniences will be caused by the damage to the old tun- nel. Its sole use was to carry the light wires to the dental building,-a de- partment which is in little use during the summer. PROF. TILDEN DISCUSSES CROWD-STRAIN ON BRIDGES (Continued from page 1) ded what is called a "factor of safety" in making their calculations on the old basis. Horizontal forces are also created by persons in walking and in step- ping suddenly. These were shown to be in some cases almost equal to one- half the static downward weight. The impotrance of making due al- lowance for these forces in the con- struction of bridges, piers, grand- stands and similar places where crowds ofpeople gather and frequ et- ly move simultaneously was shown. Professor Tilden said, by such acci- dents as that which occurred recent- ly at Long Beach, Cal., where 38 peo- ple were killed when a pier collapsed, and a similar one near Niagara Falls, last year, in which an even larger number lost their lives. The lecture was illustrated with slides showing how the tests were made and the results worked out mathematically by means of graphs. OLD GRAD SAYS UNIVERSITY IS NOW VERY HIUCH ALIVE. Recenty Installed Embalming And Sanitary Scienec Course Causes Eim to Take Notice. "Talk about this University of Mich- igan being alive," proudly exclaimed a visiting grad. "Why say, man, this University is the livest thing in the state." "More than that," he went on proudly," it is the livest thing in these United States. Why man, you can get courses here that can't be found any where else. They used to give an old terror, that "S. and R." business in the engineering department, but I hear that the students called a sympathetic strike and refused to pass the bloom- ing thing, and that the faculty had to call it off. Why, when I was here, all you could hear was debates between medics and engineers as to who had the hardest courses, and the medics al- ways laid down before "S. and R." Having courses for the live ones is all right, but is is traveling some when they have courses for the dead. That embalming and sanitary science course ought to wake a lot of them up-or else put them to sleep. The dents used to work on each other for prac- tice. Wonder if the 'undertakers' will do the same thing? Some University this, when it gets to having courses for the living and the dead." And musing thus, the old grad went over to the "cat hole" where he found some more changes. Suits Pressed, 25c, Pants 10c. Fuller & O'Connor, 619 E. William St. tf.
