ROTH. (Continued from page 1) "Conservation and Forestry." A large audience enjoyed the lecture. "Although some people seem to think that conservation is a dead is- sue," said Professor Roth, "the United States is spending five aid one-half millions annually for forestry work; The national forest reserves comprise an acreage five times the area of the state of Michigan and five times the extent of the Forest reserves of the German empire; fifteen states now have state foresters, and state legis- latures are passing at each session more progressive conservation laws. While forestry education was tom- menced late in this country methods developed here have proved superior to those of Germany, where conserva- tion of forests has been practiced for many years. Present methods of fire protection were originated by a school trained forester and the first well trained forester to go to China is a recent Chinese graduate of Michigan." Interesting stereopticon views of German forest reserves and tree nur- series, and of forest fires and their devastating effects in Michigan and Idaho., were thrown on the screen, Other pictures showed the work car- ried on in this country by foresters, and of Michigan forestry students en- gaged in field work.
