Pit IA IELPLk IAAERI',S,
Johnnie Lavan, former varsity base-
ball star who has recently been play-
ing shortstop for the St. Louis club of
the American league has been sold by
that club to Connie Mack of the Phila-
delphia Athletics-
While with the St, Louis club Lavan
made good as a shortstop, fielding his
position in excellent style. His ac-
curate throwing and heady playing in
tight places won him favor in the eyes
of the faiis fiom the start. Ttsooisy
reason for his being sold to the Phila-
delphia club is because of his weak-
ness in batting.
Connie Mack is in need of a good
fielder and is not very particular as to
batting qualities so Lavan will be put
to work at onut. Ithe stays through
and tthe Athletics ssin the flag in the
American league, Lavan wii get into
the world's series. This is exceptional
for a young player in his first season
in big company.
Goodlie Rogers, varsity backstop, is
also a member of Connie Mack's team,
having been recently, signed as a
catcher.
Oratory Assistant Gives Recital.
I. K. Isiet, assistant in oratory,
gave a lecture recital yesterday after-
noon before a large audience. He re-
cited scenes from "The Merchant of
Venisie"
