ATLANTA, GA. U. SICILY A COUNTRY er -A FUTURE ,rt Professor Cross Describes Monuments and Ruins of Historic Island Country. GREEK TRACES STILL LEFT. In introducing his lecture yester- day afternoon on "Sicily and Its Mon- uments," Professor A. L. Cross pointed out that Sicily was a country that had only a past, no future. to turo plun- dered, pillaged and misgoverned by Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Nor- mans, and Saracens, the never inde- pendent island, Is today an eloquent testifier of its history. Professor Cross illustrated his lec- ture by views of various ancient cities of Sicily, with their monuments, re- lating curious little Greek myths in connection with each. Touching upon Messina with its beautiful cathedral of Gothic-Italian architecture, Prof. Cross spoke at some length of Palmero with its magnificent harbor and dis- tant mountains, its old monuments left by the Normans of the twelfth century, its great cathedral and Episcopal pal- ace connected by two remarkable bridges. In the palace is the tomb of Rajah I, under a marble canopy. The palacethroughout is a dazlig mass of gold and marble mosaics. Some distance from Palmero stands an an- cient monastery founded by the Nor- man king, William the Good, to which can be compared, according to Prof. Cross, only St. Marks of Venice. In thiosmonastery therekare two thrones one for the bishop, and one for the king, showing the temporal independ- ence of the Norman kings.
