DETROIT } If you are looking for the Coolest Place in Town, and the Best Place to Eat, Board at The Cutting Cafe Corner of Monroe and State Streets Regular Board, Meal Tickets, and Single Meals Work on the removal of the testing materials laboratory to its new quarters in the space formerly occupied by the electrical laboratory in the west wing of the Engineering building, is progressing rapidly. The work of this department has been greatly hampered in the past by insufficient space for some of the larger machines. Particrtarly has this been so with the big hydraulic testing machine for test- ing beams, shafts, steel bars and re-in- forced concrete. This machiie is the joint invention of Prof. G. S. Williams and Prof. C. J. Tilden. It has a capacity of 85 tons and will lift beams on any span up to I2 feet. The work of this department is not confined to the experimental work in torsion, tension, compression, and ex- pansion, but tests of a practical nature. for commercial purposes are carried on. Last year extensive tests were made on copper trolley wire. Within the last two or three weeks Prof. Tilden has msade tests otn the cement work to be used on the Wall street bridge here in town. Many tests have been carried on' in re-inforced concrete but the data has not been made public. During this year tests have been made on transmis- ton shafts for automobiles. The laboratory is especially equipped for testing "I-beams," shafts, concrete, wood, iron, steel, copper, brass, alumi- num, boiler plate, and tubing. The tests on concrete for the breaking of edges, tensile strength and time to set, are made on all kinds and sizes of blocks. These tests are taken twenty- four hours after the concrete has been laid, then one week, two weeks and four seeks after laying. Some tests are continued over a per- iod of two or three years before the results are given to the public. The work of this laboratory is very import- ant to the engineer and the removal to more spacious quarters is only another step in the extension plan of the engi- neering faculty.
