11 TEN THlE MKCHIGAN DAILY! TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1959 I a ELEBRATES CENTENNIAL: Glee Club Performs in Europe I I ATTENTION: By BRUCE COLE Celebrating its centennial anni- versary this past year, the Michi- gan Men's Glee Club has just returned from a concert tour of Europe. Forty men, an accompanist and Prof. Philip A. Duey of the music school 'and director of the Glee Club spent 35 days visiting Great Britain, France, Belgium, Nether- lands, Germany, Denmark, Swe- den and Norway. The program consisted generally of songs by American composers including folk and college songs. Sings in Contest At Llangollen, Wales, the group sang in an international music contest, and they had special radio appearances in France, Denmark and Sweden. Another special con- cert was given in West Berlin. The entire trip was financed from the money added to the Glee Club treasury over a period of several years. Most of the funds came from concert receipts and record sales. In 1955, the Club went on a four-week concert tour of Europe at which time they gave a com- mand performance before Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. Gives Many Concerts Throughout the year, the Club gives many concerts on campus as well as other cities in this area. In the fall of 1951, it began its combined concert program which has proven very successful. The combined programs are usually with the glee club of a football opponent. The first such concert was at Cornell. Others have been with Michigan State, Ohio State, In- diana and Illinois. On Nov. 21, the Club will give a joint concert with Ohio State at the University. The Glee Club is student-man- aged and self-perpetuating. The student officers are completely re- sponsible for the managing of the' Club's concert tours and other activities. Although the Club has ap- peared in a variety of dress throughout the past, formal wear only is worn during concerts as club members feel "everyaspect must be considered if professional standards are to be maintained as they have been in the past." Small ensemble groups and soloists have also been featured with the Club in the past. Changes Director Format Although the Glee Club had faculty directors from its con- ception in 1859 to 1894, it was felt in 1894 that since the Club was entirely student managed, it should also bestudent directed. Therefore, from 1894 to 1909, students directed the Club. Finally, though, Club members requested a faculty director to take charge of the organization because members realized their limitations in experience and skill. Prof. Duey, the club director, came to the University in 1947 to teach vocal music. Before coming to the University, he was a mem- ber of the "Revelers" quartet with James Melton, Lewis James and Wilfred Glenn. Sang under Toscanini He has sung under John Philip Sousa, George Szell, Paul White- man, and Toscanini and he has appeared with Fred Allen, Al Jolson, Deems Taylor, Grace Moore and Jan Peerce. The Glee Club director has played Broadway in "Lady Do" and "Good News." Prof. Duey received his bache- lor of arts and master of music degrees from Indiana University and his master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from Co- lumbia University. He was head of the music de- partment of Butler University be- fore coming here and he has recently published a book, "Bel Canto in Its Golden Age." Publishes Club Arrangements In 1956. Prof. Duey began pub- lication of the "Michigan Glee Club Series." This series includes arrangements of many of the works the Club has done in the past. At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13, a mass meeting will be held in the Union Ballroom to inform interested men about the Glee Club and to assign them appointments for in- dividual tryouts. The tryouts will be held during the first week of classes. The club encourages everyone to attend and. it is stressed that vocal experience is not necessary. Attending the mass meeting does not obligate one in any way.
