Superior leadership in activi- ties and athletics characterize junior men who are tapped for Michigamua, founded in 1902. Initiates are coated with brick dust to tint their skins and are dressed like Indians. They are then harnessed to a hawser for the traditional Rope Day duck- walk to the top of the Union. The tribal initiation ceremony is staged around the sacred Tap- pan Oak near the General Li- brary. All new members are then given Indian names along with their own. Prospective members must with- stand hours of exercise and cold water baths before they are con- sidered worthy to "speak-um In- dian talk and speak-um wisely. Speak-um slowly and think-um what say-um." Druids . . Founded in 1910, Druids tap junior . men enrolled in all the undergraduate units of the Uni- versity . except the engineering college. Initiates are recognized for outstanding leadership in ac- tivities and varsity athletics. New members are dressed to resemble young trees. Their ini- tiation ceremony, characterized by the watering of the young "saplings," transforms them until they grow into mighty trees. Joyce Kilmer's poem, "Trees" is recited during the ceremony. New members all have names that typify their personalities. .,Old members, staunch and mighty oaks, are regally attired in robes and hoods for the initiataion. Vulcans . . Mighty Vulcan, holding court on Mt. Aetna, yearly calls into his society campus leaders and out- standing athletes who are juniors in the engineering college. Since its inception in 1904, Vul- cans has initiated its members by greasing their bodies a gleaming black and having them carry flaming torches which light the symbolic anvil near the Engineer- ing Arch. Members all assume mythologi- cal names with their own. Triangles . . . Junior athletes and leaders in the engineering school are eligible for membership in Triangles. Ini- tiates "sail" across the Diag on a roller skate, wearing a white dunce cap. Part of the soapy initiation ceremony includes scrubbing the floor of the "sacred" Engineering Arch. } -Daily-Peter Anderson PEACE PIPE-Members of the tribe of Michigamua arrange themselves in a solemn line before the sacred Tappan Oak, where they smok6 the pipe of peace and sing the Indian chant prior to initiating the chosen palefaces into the band. The initiates, huddled around the tree, must pass many tests and prove their courage and loyalty in many ways before they can call themselves Fighting Braves, and receive their Indian names. TRIANGLES-To prove themselves before entering the sacred so- ciety, initiates of the junior engineering honorary propel them- selves on one roller skate to the seal on the Diag, which they must wash with reverential care before being judged worthy. a 1;". rr."::i+:"" ::'f4::" ;t'°";a 7" vSs":":"::L"; "}yr.;.y;: ; "r.::.,rci" ":":r:""i,:{":":r:.";r,." ;;t.,i.; ; e";:;: ."":FF"X{":F?%.rr ." :;{."r{.",v i ^r "" :}."". ;., rv,:}ry:y;"s":v:,;c:y ik "4"ek'err"" X ar22' . : r.+x.''s " fi .r'' .s k" t .
