TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAO E TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGK TWI~E~ Golfers Glimb from Ninth to Second in Big Ten 4 By CLIFF MARKS Michigan's golfers should haV% one one thought in mind this year: grab the Big Ten Cham- pionship which barely eluded them in 1959 when the Confer- ence tourney was held on the friendly fairways of the Univer- sity Course. The second-place Wolverines of 1959 will begin the 1960 season with a nucleus of three lettermen, including Captain Larry Mark- man and juniors Joe Brisson and Dick Youngberg who were fifth and tenth respectively in the Cony. ference Meet last spring. Lost by graduation from the squad that was runner-up to powerful Purdue are ex-captain Ray Lovell, and lettermen Pat Keefe and Chuck Blackett. The three-man nucleus will need plenty of help, ,especially from the sophomores, according to 'Coach Bert Katzenmeyer who says that the Conference. will be much stronger in 1960. "It gets stronger every year," said the coach. He explained that Iowa has a terrific team develop- ing, with three transfers from Houston University eligible in Big Ten teams, the category of 1960. improvement. These other teams Those three, coming from a in order of their finish behind real golf school, will team with the Buckeyes in '59 are Wisconsin, a couple of juniors, Frank James and Bob Davis, who led the Con- ference Meet at the half-way mark as sophs last spring. Davis, a 25-year-old service veteran, went on to finish second to Pur- due's perennial champ, John Kon- sek, who has won the Big Ten two straight years and will be around for a third try this spring., Purdue Strongt The Boilermakers, Big Tenh Champs two straight years along with their ace, will have three other members of the 1959 squad back. The only two graduationr losses were Carl Mitchell and Harley Drake. Indiana, which tied for third place with Ohio State last spring, certainly should not be any weaker with their entire team re- turning plus a 1958 letterman who didn't play in the conference, not4 to mention the usual promising sophomores. LARRY MARKMAN Ohio State fits into the sameg category along with all the other Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Illinois. Counts on Two To combat this improvement of the rest of the conference, Katz- enmeyer has singled out two boys as likely to come through for the linksmen this spring. One is junior John Everhardus, an Ann Arbor product who was on the varsity last year but didn't make the first team. "John was under serious consideration all year," said Katzenmeyer. The other is Tom Wilson, a transfer student from Valparasio. who played on the freshman squad in 1959. "I singled out Tom because of his tournament back- ground," explained Katzenmeyer. Wilson, a Detroiter, will be a senior in credits this year, but is only a junior in eligibility, thus, he could play two years for the Wolverines. Letter Winners Strengthen Squad One thing the 1960 Wolverines can't do is make the comeback that the 1959 team did, a jump from ninth to second in the Big Ten. In relation to this, Katzenmeye'r said that he, and especially the boys, were still disappointed. "We had a grip on the Cham- pionship but it slipped away," he said. "Don't get me wrong, how- ever. Second is certainly better than ninth. The boys worked hard and the Conference Meet was the climax, but I guess we were just not supposed to win it." The Wolverines, who had com- piled a 8-5 dual meet record dur- ing the regular season, were the first day leaders in the Big Ten Meet on their home course. The margin was a slim one, three strokes over Indiana, but it ex- isted. The next day, Purdue's experi- enced Boilermakers seemed to thrive in the early morning rain and took a 54-hole lead of five strokes over Michigan and Indi- ana into the final 18 holes. At this point, the Purdue team really turned on the steam to win the title going away with a 20-stroke margin, 1555-1575 over the host squad.
