TIWE MICHIGAN DAILY WE Dl THE ICHIAN DILYvv S.4N Am Program Supports Research Important research and thera- peutic techniques c o n c e r n i n g some of the most dreaded of hu- man diseases is currently being done by University medical scien- tists. With the aid of gifts to the Michigan Memorial-Phoenix Pro- ject, the medical scientists are working on the problems present- ed by cancer, cretinism and the sterilization and storage of bones. Radioisotopes are being used by Medical Center physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of malignancies, includ- ing cancers of the abdomen, thy- roid, eye and brain. Track Growths The isotopes, in the form of radioactive iodine, phosphorus, gold and other chemical elements, are used in tracking and outlin- ing cancerous growth. Pin-point localization and iden- tification of some brain tumors is now possible through new ma- chines and techniques. Surgical Use Newly-developed tracer tech- niques for identifying the edges of a tumor visually undetectable from healthy brain tissue can even be used during surgery. Treatment of patients suffering from deep-seated cancer and tu- mors is carried on daily in anoth- er medical unit established by the Phoenix Program. Cretinism, a congenital de- formity marked by mental and physical retardation, is another of the maladies under study at the University. Prevention Seen Recent developments in the field of thyroid research are pointing the way toward preven- tion of cretinism through proper treatment of mothers during pregnancy. The sterilization and preserva- tion. of bone and some soft tissue is being done by gamma radia- tion, a technique developed by University scientists. The bone and tissue are used for surgical transplantation. " AlmaColg Begins Worki On Quadrangle The first men's residence in a planned quadrangle is currently being erected at Alma College. The completed residence quad- rangle will accommodate 720 stu- dents in four dormitories and will include a commons building for dining. Construction on'the first unit, begun early this month, is being done by the Spence Brothers Con-4 tracting Company of Saginaw. The three-story structure will provide housing for 185 men plus a residence director's apartment, special guest rooms, spacious lounges, service rooms and recre- ational facilities. The quadrangle was planned, according to Kent Hawley, Dean of Men of Alma College, to pro- vide more on-campus housing for students. "Alma's new residence plan will enable us to provide a better. campus experience in the education of all our students," he said. Records show on-campus stu- dents study more effectively, make higher grades and also par- ticipate in extracurricular activi- ties to a greater extent than those living off-campus, he explained. The men's residence unit, for upper classmen, isexpected to be open in the fall of 1900. Plans for the quadrangle include three ad- ditional residence -halls, one for men and two for women..
