958 TIE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE F Phils Drop Smith from Helm; Sawyer Called To Fill Position I1 I I I, 3S '?" :. *a PHILADELPHIA (P) - The Philadelphia Phillies fired mana- ger Mayo Smith yesterday and re- placed him with Eddie Sawyer who directed the club to the Na- tional League pennant in 1950. "We needed a change," said general manager Ray Hamey in announcing Smith's dismissal. "It was sudden," said Smith, "but that's baseball." Glad to Be Back "I'm glad to be back," com- mented Sawyer. Hamey's answer as to why the Phillies were rehiring a man they fired because he didn't win, was: "Eddie had a good record while * he was here." That record was a third place finish in 1949, a pennant in 1950, fifth in 1951, and fourth in 1952, when Sawyer was replaced in mid- season by Steve O'Neill. Hamey said he had been con- sidering the move about a month. He said, "no one thing tipped the scale. I just thought we needed a change." Smith, who was signed by Ha- mey in 1955, leaves the club in sixth place, half a game out of the cellar, two games from the first division, and 8%1 behind the front running San Francisco Gi- ants, the opponent last night as Sawyer takes over. The Phillies, just prior to the All-Star Game, won seven in a row and vaulted to third place in the topsy turvey National League race. They were 21/2 games from first place. Nose Dive But following the All-Star break, the club nose dived into the second division. Everything went wrong. The hitters slumped. The pitching went sour. Smith said he got the word about 1 p.m. (EDT) yesterday. "Nobody feels good about being fired," he said. "But that's the way baseball is and that's the risk you take. I'll go home to Lake Worth, Fla. in a couple of days. I have no definite plans, but certainly hope to remain in base- ball." 0(1 HAVEN'T HEARD~ MY LATEST WORD --HUNGaE T-19 VERY WELL WHAT'S HUNG'ERI' lf + T!S A FIVE INCH .: PLATE WITH A SSIX INCH HOLE INI By Johnny Hart KNOCK IT OF OFl~ DON NEWCOMBE ... only two wins Three Hurlers Expected To Win TwentyGames 11 NEW YORK ()-Twenty-game winners are likely to be scarce this season with only Bob Turley and Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees and Warren Spahn of Milwaukee moving strongly toward the prized goal. Withonly a shade more than two months remaining in the ma- jor league baseball campaign, the three pitchers are the only ones with at least 12 victories. Turley has won 14 games and Ford and Spahn 12 each. Neither Ford nor Turley has ever won 20 games in one season although Whitey came close in 1956 when he had 19 and dropped a 1-0 decision to Baltimore in his last start. Turley's high is 17 tri- umphs. Spahn, a 20-game. winner eight times in 13 seasons, figures to be the only pitcher to repeat from among those who reached the mark in 1957. The others, Billy Pierce of Chicago and Jim Bun- ning of Detroit, got off to slow starts and began to pick up only in the last six weeks. Pierce has won nine games while Bunning's no-hit job against Boston Sunday was his eighth tri- umph. Pitchers with 11 victories are rookie Ray Semproch of Philaiel- phia, Bob Friend of Pittsburgh and Bob Purkey of Cincinnati. Those with 10 games won are Johnny Podres of Los Angeles, Johnny Antonelli of San Fran- cisco, Ike Delock of Boston, who has yet to lose, and Ray Narleski of Cleveland. The 1958 aggregate of 20-game winners almost certainly will not equal the total of nine hit two, years ago. Among those in the coveted category in 1956 were Bob Lemon and Herb Score of Cleve- land, currently on the disabled list, and Don Newcombe of Cincinnati, who has won only two games. There has been at least one 20- game winner in the National League each year since 1931. The American League had no such pitcher in 1955. FOR SALE 1954 FLEETWOOD, 34 ft., 1 bedroom.
