TlE M CHTGAN DAILY T Three Given 'U' Positions By Regents The Regents approved the ap- pointment of three emeritus mem- bers of the faculty to positions for the 1958-59 school year. Prof. Emeritus Carl J. Coe of the mathematics department was appointed lecturer in mathematics at Flint College for the first se- mester of 1958-59. _g Edward Young, professor emer- itus of geodesy and surveying, was appointed a half-time consultant to the University Research In- stitute. Frank E. Robbins, assistant to the president emeritus, was re- appointed as editor of the Quar- terly Review for the period from July 1, 1958 to June 30, 1959, a post he has held since 1955. AT COMMENCEMENT: 'U' Gives Degrees to 5,813 Students Degrees were confered on 5,813 graduates June 14, as the Univer- sity held its 114th commencement exercises. Honored at the exercises were 3,594 June graduates, 1,202 Feb- ruary graduates, and 1,017 who completed degree requirements at the end of the 1957 Summer Ses- sion. Five honorary degrees were also granted during the exerecises. Re- cipients included Catherine D. Bowen, biographer, from Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Charles A. Chayne, vice-president in charge of the1 General Motors engineering staff, and Glenn M. Coulter, Detroit lawyer. Others who received honorary degrees were Joseph C. Satterth- waite, director - general of the United States Foreign Service and Prof. Glenn T. Seaborg of, the University of California at Berkley chemistry department, a Nobel prize winner. The Flint college of the Univer- sity, which opened in the fall of 1956, awarded degrees to 76 stu- dents, its first graduates.
