I Vot . THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1957 looked Pirates Put Braves Three Games Out I r .. 1 1 an l~ BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. () - Herb Score, 24-yr.-old Cleveland Indians' pitching star, and a high school classmate, Nancy McNam- ara, were married yesterday at St. Mark's Catholic Church. The couple left on a honeymoon, trip, which will have to be short, because Score is scheduled to re- port Monday to a Cleveland doc- tor who will decide whether he has recovered sufficiently from an eye injury to return to baseball. Vaughn Wins CHICAGO UP) - Sharpshooter Willie Vaughn flailed Chebo Her- nandez with lefts and rights at will in the seventh round last night to stop the rugged Mexican middleweight from Juarez on a technical knockout at 2:19. The last three rounds of the na- tionally televised scrap in Chicago Stadium were filled with violence as each fighter landed staggering rights. PITTSBURGH (AP)-Bob Purkey gave up only six hits as the hust- ling Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the second-place Milwaukee Braves, 5-2, last night and drop- ped the Braves three full games back of the league-leading St. Louis Cardinals. The seventh-place Pirates won their fourth in a row. Gene Baker supplied the payoff punch with a three-run single in the sixth in- ning to break a 2-2 tie. 'Doubleheaders Too Much': Musial ST. LOUIS (R) - Stan Musial, the National League's iron man, said yesterday he has played his last doubleheader of the 1957 sea- son. The great . St. Louis Cardinal star, with the full approval of Manager Fred Hutchinson. has decided it would be best for him as wellas, his team if he sat out the second games of twin bills for the remainder of the season. "I have reached the point where playing two nine-inning games in one day takes too much out of me," Musial said a little sadly. Anyone interested in summer intramural golf should contact the Sports Building at NO 3-4181. -Rod Grambeau The victory gave the right- hander Purkey a 9-7 record. Bob Buhl, who allowed only five hits in the first six innings, was charged with his fifth defeat in 14 decisions. Eddie Matthews got the Braves off to a two-run lead in the first inning with his 18th homer of the season after a single by Red Schoendienst. The Pirates forged a tie in the fourth on Bob Skinner's inside- the-park circuit clout. Kuenn Takes It Hard Taking the loss pretty hard, however, was Harvey Kuenn, De- troit's 26-yr.-old captain. Kuenn Tuesday played in his fifth con- secutive All-Star game at short- stop, even though he has been currently switched to third base by manager Jack Tighe. Indicative of the great pro that he is, is the fact that Kuenn moved to the hot corner "without any practice whatsoever. "Last week was the first time. I had ever played third base in the majors. I played one inning in spring training, but never during the pennant race," the blond- haired star revealed. Rookie Ronnie Samford has filled in capably at short, leaving Kuenn rather puzzled as to just what position he will be playing. 'Know Nothing Definite' $"I guess they want me to stay at third, but I don't know any- thing definite about it," he said. When asked which team had the best pitching staff this year, he quipped. "I could name seven of them. Seriously though, they have all improved over last sea- Son." Another shift might take place, Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE W L Pct. I that of Reno Bertoia from third to short. Bertoia, who was one of the league's leading hitters for the first month, attended .Michi- gan on a baseball scholarship in 1953. Bertoia, a good-looking 22-yr.- old, told why he signed with De- troit after only one semester at Michigan. "I received offers from several teams, but the _ Tigers were the first one to mention money. On the advice of my coach at As- sumption High School in Wind- sor, I accepted." Bertoia explained his pheno- menal batting. success by saying, "I was more assured and had greater confidence. I think I ma- tured a lot at Charleston last year." Both Bertoia and Kuenn are in unison with the rest of the league in their appraisal of Cleveland's Herb Score as the toughest pitch- er.
