THE MICHIGAN DAILY George Wilson Will Cqach Lions CLASSIFIEI 'MORALE STILL HIGH': 'Milwaukee-Chasers' Cite Rally Hopes Resignation By Parker Opens Post i MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES LINES \ 1 DAY 3 DAYS 6 DAYS 2 .80 2.00 2.96 3 .96 2.40 3.55 4 1.12 2.80 4.14 A week ago, the Cardinals were in first place in the most excit- ing pennant race the National League has had in years. No more than three games separated the first five clubs. Yesterday, by virtue of a seven- game winning streak, the Braves have taken the most commanding position any club has had all year. Joyride? With the punishing home stretch still ahead, it would be foolish to say the Braves are in but should they increase their al- ready imposing advantage in their tough series with the Cards and Reds this week, the home stretch may become a joyride. From now through Sunday, the Braves will play four games with St. Louis and three with Cincin- nati. At the same time Brooklyn and Philadelphia will be meeting the second division New York Gi- ants and Pittsburgh Pirates. When the Cards and Reds are not playing the Braves, they will be the guests of the last-place Chi- cago Cubs. Most worried of the managers is Fred Hutchinson, whose Cards have lost six in succession, tumb- ling out of the top spot. "Milwaukee is hot right now," he said, "and I look for them to cool off a bit. But we can'teafford to wait for them to come back to us. We've got to start winning - and right now." CALHOUN: AAU Bounces Top Hurdler HIGH POINT, N. C. P) - The Carolinas Amateur Athletic Union cancelled yesterday the registra- tion card of Lee Calhoun, Olym- pic hurdles champion from Gary, Ind. Calhoun, a student at North Carolina College at Durham, was married several days ago on a TV show, "Bride and Groom." He and his bride, the former Gwendo- lyn Bannister of Pinehurst, re- ceived many gifts from sponsors, including a Paris honeymoon. They are now in Paris. The Olympic champion was ad- vised by Dan Ferris, AAU execu- tive secretary, that appearance on the show and acceptance of the gifts would violate AAU rules. Calhoun decided to go on with the show. Joe P. Glynn of Greensboro, president of the Carolinas AAU, said the Negro hurdler could ap- peal to the national board of gov- ernors. DETROIT (') Lions yesterday regret" Buddy - The Detroit accepted "with Parker's abrupt 1t Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE I NATIONAL LEAGUE 11 resignation after six successful seasons and named his top assis- tant, George Wilson, to succeed him. The 43-yr.-old Wilson, a long- time Chicago Bears' standout who was starting his ninth season as an assistant coach, got a one-year Contract and a promise that "the job is yours as long as you do a good job." President Edwin J. Anderson, while.denying reports of a major split among the club's directors over Parker's frequent threats to, quit and his sometimes-explosive makeup, said he was at a loss to explain what he called Parker's "impetuous action." Parker walked out Monday night on the National Football League team he had guided to three Western Division cham- pionships, calling his 1957hclub "the worst team I've ever seen in training camp." He said his good- by in two sentences that thudded down on nearly 600 persons as- sembled at the annual "Meet the. Lions" banquet at a downtown hotel. Wilson, .getting a crack at the job that eluded him in 1951 when, Parker was selected to succeed the late Alvin N. (Bo) McMillin said he contemplated no changes in the coaching staff, in rules and regulations at the training camp at nearby Bloomfield Hills nor in player-coach relationships. While Parker noted that this year's material is good, he said "there has been no life . .. no go. It's a completely dead team." Figure 5 average words to a line. Classified deadline, 3 P.M. daily.
